Obituary & Death Notice |
| Death of Pilot Matthew Damon Death of Pilot Matthew Damon.
(Special to the Courant.)
Saybrook, May 31.
Matthew Damon, the old Connecticut River pilot, was found dead in his pilot boat in the river at Brockway's Ferry yesterday afternoon. His head was hanging over the boat. Probably death was due to heart failure. He was known as one of the best pilots on the river. He had piloted many boats up to Hartford during the past thirty-five years. He was the first man to take out sailing parties from Fenwick many years ago, in the old yacht Quickstep, now owned in Hartford by members of the Hartford Yacht Club. He was about 68 years old and was unmarried. He lived with his brother, Nathaniel, at the ferry.
