Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon for John McKay, 82 years old, who was killed instantly early Saturday morning by an east bound train on a crossing only a few hundred feet from his own home. Mr McKay, an early riser himself, was on his way to give a message to a neighbour whose work made it necessary for him to leave home around 6.30 Apparently the elderly man, who had to cross the tracks, did not notice the approach of the Montreal flier which stops here only if there are sleeping car passengers to get off. It was on its way through the station running one minute late at 6.41 (D.S.T.) when the accident happened one block east of the depot on Church Street crossing. There are three tracks there – the main line and two passing tracks, and it is possible either he did not see the approaching train at all or if he did the thought it was on one of the sidings.
Coroner On Train
It so happened that on this particular morning Dr John McEwen of Carleton Place was a passenger on the train and as he is a Lanark coroner, he was asked to take charge by Provincial Constable A.R. Mitchell who was called to the scene. Dr McEwen gave the train leave to proceed after a delay of some 25 minutes and released the body having decided it was a pure accident with no inquest necessary. Mr McKay was a fine old gentleman with many friends, and the mishap shocked all those who knew him and created much sympathy for his wife and family. Deceased was an Oddfellow and on Sunday evening a large number of members of the Craft from Vivan Lodge, Arnprior, held a service at the house, and six of the brethren acted as pallbearers at the funeral which was held on Tuesday from the family home on Church street. Services were conducted in the Almonte United Church of which he was a faithful member and at the grave side in the Auld Kirk Cemetery by Rev J. Ray Anderson.
Native of Lanark
Born in Lanark Township, he was in the lumber business in Arnprior until his retirement 20 years ago. Some 13 years ago he and his wife took up residence in Almonte. On June 26th of this year Mr and Mrs McKay celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary. Left to mourn in his widow, the former Mary Jane Rodger, of Almonte; one son, T. Lloyd McKay of Ottawa and three daughters Mrs Howard Giles (Olive), of Almonte, Mrs J.V. Baker (Laura), of Winnipeg and Mrs M.J. Duncan (Ethel), of Almonte. There are also three sisters and four brothers; Mrs J.R. Reid and Mrs James Rodger of Almonte and Mrs W. Mealey of Brandon, Man; Welland of Almonte, Thomas of Brandon, Alex of Sinclair and Charles of Ramsay Township; also 11 grandchildren.
