Notes |
- MELVYN SPRATT Melvyn Spratt died December 21, 2001 after a weeks stay at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. He had celebrated his 95th birthday November 25, 2001. Mel was born at Elgin, MB in 1906. He farmed with his father and took an active part in community affairs playing baseball and hockey. He enjoyed grooming and driving his horses. Mel met his wife Eleanor Sloan when she moved from Winnipeg to Elgin to teach school. She and Mel were married and raised a son and three daughters. When the children finished their education, they moved to Brandon. Mel worked at Lee Implements, Brandon Hardware and Box Brothers Hardware on 10th Street. He made many friends during these years at work. He appreciated the gifts that Mother Nature provided - growing a garden, caring for his flowers and fruit trees and feeding the wild birds. Mel always had a dog. He made sure the dogs were trained and obedient. He will be remembered for the love he had for Bear - his last little dog, whose ashes were buried with him. Mel was very proud of his family and kept in touch with each one of them. They, in turn, loved Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa. He had many nieces and nephews. There was always a car in his driveway. Mel lived life to the fullest and, as he aged, he accepted the limitations of his activities. He was a wonderful father, neighbour and friend who will be very much missed. Mel is survived by his children, Bud (Marj) of Portage, Donna (Wilbie) of Inglis, Ruby (Jack) of Ottawa and Joan (Pat) of Edmonton and their children. He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor; his brothers, George who was killed in the Second World War, and Willard; and his sisters, Pearl, Ruby, Kathleen and Nettie. Funeral service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Wednesday, January 2, 2002 with Rev. John van Vliet officiating. Interment followed in Elgin Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, Randy Munro, Greg and Jody McNiell, Cal Spratt, great-grandson Ryan Spratt and granddaughter Tammie Millar. Donations, if desired, in memory of Mel, may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements were in care of Brockie Donovan, Brandon.
