  • Notes
    • Mrs. Smith was born in Connecticut and raised and attended school in Old Lyme. She attended college and graduated from Brown University, where she met husband Aubrey H.(Hubert) Smith. They were married in 1930 in Old Lyme. Shortly after they moved to West Lafayette, Indiana where husband Hubert taught Mathematics at Purdue University.
Mrs. Smith enjoyed working in their beautiful yard and was an avid bird watcher, documenting her observations of wildlife over the year. She raised many flowers in her garden carrying on a tradition she learned from her father. She and her husband were also very active in activities with other Purdue couples and their local Presbyterian Church. The Smiths were also big supporters of Purdue sports and later in life, Doris never missed a televised game.
The Smiths had no children but travelled often to Oregon to visit sister Leonie, Husband Walt, and their two boys, with whom they were very close. Both Doris and Hubert enjoyed the mountains, lakes and streams of the west and made several trips to Oregon including an excursion to Crater Lake National Park with their nephews and family.
The Smiths lived in Florida 1/2 of the year for many years after retirement but later, after the trips became too much, settled back in West Lafayette where they spent the rest of their lives close to their community of friends associated with Purdue University.
