- Eloise J. McDowell, 80 of Pittsfield, IL passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Eastside Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Pittsfield. Eloise was born in Pike County, IL on June 5, 1933, a daughter of Eben and Rita Splain Pennock. She married Stuart Thornton and he preceded her in death then married Elton ?Ed? Edwards and he preceded her in death. In 1982 she and Bernie McDowell married and he preceded her in death in 2009.
Eloise was a member of the Detroit Methodist Church and had attended church in Milton and Detroit. She had worked in the restaurant business and had worked at several businesses in Pike County. At one time she owned a restaurant in St. Elmo, IL. She retired in 1998 from Smith-Barr Manor as a dietician. She was a St. Louis Cardinal fan, enjoyed reading, crossword and word search puzzles and sewing. She dearly loved her grandkids and never missed a chance to be with them.
She is survived by two sons, Stanley (Susan) Barker of Baylis, IL and Bob (Tina) Edwards of Detroit, IL; one daughter, Pat Thornton and husband Bryan Glenn of Mishawaka, IN and a stepdaughter, Lyla Paull of Mississippi. Ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren survive in addition to a sister, Geneva Wheeler of Texas. Eloise was preceded in death by her husbands, a daughter, Linda Thornton Brown, a brother, Everett Pennock and a sister, Elizabeth ?Libby? Barker.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 13, 2014 at the Detroit Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Kelly officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday evening, January 12, 2014 at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the Detroit Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Bethel Cemetery near Detroit. A lunch for family and friends will be held at the Detroit Town Hall after interment.
Memorials are suggested to be made to the Bethel Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.nieburfh.com. The Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield has been entrusted with the service.
