    • H. Keith Speckman, 86, of Port Byron, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.
      Services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday. Memorials may be made to the Port Byron Congregational Church or the American Heart Association.
      Harry Keith Speckman was born April 17, 1921, in Moline, the son of Harry and Gertrude Pulver Speckman. He graduated from Port Byron High School in 1938. He then attended Augustana College and the University of Illinois. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, serving as a meteorologist and in intelligence until he was discharged in 1946 from the Great Lakes Station. He married Virginia R. Purinton, his childhood neighbor, on June 5, 1946. She died on Jan. 15, 2008.
      Keith worked as a metal foreman at Alcoa, Davenport, for 10 years. He operated a marine and contracting business for five years. He then was employed at John Deere Plow Planter Works for 20 years, retiring on May 1, 1983. After his retirement, he joined his wife in her flower business until their retirement in December 1999. They operated the flower shop for 38 years.
      He served as justice of the peace and later as police magistrate. He was Republican precinct committeeman, township supervisor, served on the village council, was a member of the Port Byron Volunteer Fire Department, was an EMT and was assistant fire chief. Keith was a member of the Port Byron Business Association, the Bicentennial Committee in 1976 and the Time Capsule program. He had been chairman of the Civil War Days and the Great River Tug. He had been an interim minister at the Port Byron Congregational Church for 30 years. He was an active member of the River Cities Rotary Club since 1983, where he served as president, secretary-treasure and was selected as district governor of Rotary International in 1993. He was also a member of the Coe Lamb American Legion Post 421, where he had served as commander and finance officer and was also a a member of the Philo Masonic Lodge, Port Byron, and the Moline Consistory.
      Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Pierre Habis, Slidell, La., and Karen and Allen Dipple, Davenport; grandchildren, Carl (Tresa) Habis, Center Point, Ore., and Angelique Habis, San Francisco, Calif.; a great-grandchild, Mackenzie Habis; a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Joan Speckman, Port Byron; a niece, Margie Calvin, Port Byron; a nephew, Marcus Speckman; and a great-nephew, Drew.
