    • Herbert M. Ellsworth, 82, of Portland, died Wednesday, (December 25, 2002) at Middlesex Hospital. The beloved husband of Frances (Banning) Ellsworth, they would have celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on May 19, 2003. Born in Middletown, August 12, 1920, he was the son of McClure E. and Katherine (O'Connell) Ellsworth. Besides his wife, Frances, he is survived by his son, McClure E. Ellsworth and his special companion Linda Kieth of San Antonio, TX; his two daughters, Deborah A. Ellsworth of Framingham, MA, and Sarah E. Perruccio and her husband Gary of Meriden; three grandchildren, Marissa E. Ellsworth of Charleston, SC, Matthew and Mallory Perruccio of Meriden; a great granddaughter, Hannah Pribilski of Charleston, SC; his sister-in-law, Elizabeth P. Ellsworth of Portland; his brother-in-law, Lewis D. Banning and his wife Evelyn of Manchester; many nieces and nephews; and his lifelong friend, Norman P. Hanson of Portland. He was predeceased by two sisters, Pauline Patricia Csere and Laura E. Ackerman; and a brother, Thomas K. Ellsworth.
      A lifelong resident of Portland, he was interested in his town's history. He was a charter member of the Portland Historical Society and was elected as the society's first president. He was a member of the Portland Planning and Zoning Commission and served as chairman for five years. He was a director of Buck Library, a member of the Building Committee for the new Portland Library, and a member of the Center Cemetery Board of Directors.
      A veteran of World War II, he served overseas in the China, Burma, India Theatre with the 24th Combat Mapping Squad (H) and was a member of the C.B.I. Veteran Association. He was a member of the Carpenter and Joiners Union #24 for 60 years. He was a member of St. Mary Church and Warren Lodge No. 51. Educated in Portland schools, he also attended the University of Connecticut. An avid collector of music from the Big Band era, he carried on an extensive tape correspondence in the United States, as well as with his friend, Stan Nilsen of Grimsby, England.
      Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec 30, 10am at the Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 231 Main St., Portland, and 11am in the Church of St. Mary, Portland. Burial will be in the family plot at Center Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday, 3-6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Portland Visiting Nurses Association, 309 Main St., Portland, CT, the Red Cross Transportation Fund, 97 Broad Street, Middletown, CT or the Portland Volunteer Fire Department Emergency Medical Services, PO Box 71, Portland, CT.
