FRANKLIN ? Ralph Clinton Whitney, 95, of Franklin, died March 24, 2003 at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, after a long and productive life.
He was born Nov. 29, 1907, the son of Eugene Levi and Freda (Bannister) Whitney in Williamstown, Vt.
He earned his bachelor of science degree at Middlebury College in June 1933. He later returned to graduate work and received his master's degree at the University of Vermont.
Ralph began his lifelong career of teaching in Fairfax, Vt., and continued as a high school science and Vice Principal until 1974, when he retired from Delaware Literary Institute and Franklin Central School.
During World War II he worked as a metallurgist for Jones & Lamson, a defense plant in Springfield, Vt., then he became a partner in Weeks and Whitney Dairy in North Charleston, N.H. In 1949, he moved with his family to Franklin.
In 1956, with a few colleagues, he helped found the Delaware County Teachers Federal Credit Union, now the Chen-Del-O Federal Credit Union, and became its treasurer for many years.
He was a 50-plus member of the Franklin F.&A.M. Lodge No. 562, and a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church since 1950. Ralph was a staunch member of the National Education Association, serving each of these organizations in many capacities.
Ralph was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Andrews) Whitney, whom he married June 21, 1936. Also, by Susan Whitney, Donald, Susan and Joseph Westcott.
Ralph is survived by four children, Ernest, Carolyn and Wayne Worden, Joanne Westcott and D. Louise and Donald Hebbard; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Gene Whitney and Jill, Jason and Brent Whitney, Mitchell and Sonya Worden, Wendy Worden and Corey Schmitz, Kathi Westcott and Teri, Tim, Tracy, Megan and T.J. Hebbard, Anthony, Kristin and Katherin Hebbard, Carensa, Mike and Shelby Hunter, Jennifer Hebbard and fiance, Nate, and Heather, Oliver and Liam Gingrich.
As an educator, Ralph felt strongly about students furthering their knowledge by a hands-on participation, so many years ago he made the decision to donate his total body to The Anatomical Gift Program at The Albany Medical College for this purpose.
Memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Contributions in Ralph Whitney's memory may be sent to the Memorial Fund of the Franklin United Methodist Church in Franklin, NY 13775.
