- AYERST Jane Byrd Ruffin Ayerst, age 75, died on March 12, 2008 after a brief battle with cancer. She was born on May 11, 1932 in Durham, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Julian Meade Ruffin and Lucy Landon Noland Ruffin of Durham NC, her husband, Dr. Robert Irvin Ayerst of New Orleans, LA and her sister, Lucy Ruffin Sprague of Tenafly, NJ. She is survived by her children Robert Irvin Ayerst, Jr. of Germantown, TN, Elizabeth Ayerst Alquist of Metairie, LA, her sister Judith Ruffin Anderson of Winchester, VA, and four grandchildren, Amanda Ayerst, Allan Farber, Tim Farber and Allison Ayerst. She was a graduate of Chatham Hall Prep School in Chatham, VA and Duke University where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a resident of New Orleans and a member of Trinity Church since 1958. She served on the board of the Symphony Volunteers and was a long time supporter of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. She was Chairman of the Symphony Book Fair in 1973 and a volunteer for this organization for almost forty years. In 1990, she received the Longue Vue Volunteer of the Year Award where she was a volunteer docent for over twenty years. In addition, she served on the board of the Longue Vue House & Gardens and worked with the Curator of the Collection. Visitation will be at Trinity Church at 4 PM on Friday, March 14 followed by a memorial service at 5 PM in the sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Trinity Episcopal Church, 1329 Jackson Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130 or Symphony Book Fair, 8605 Oak Street, New Orleans, LA 70118. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
