    • Groton - Samuel Sacks, 83, of Poquonnock Road, Groton, died Monday, July 23, 2007 at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London with his loving family at his side.
      He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 8, 1924.
      He married the Edith Phelps who predeceased him.
      Samuel was a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy retiring in 1965. He was a veteran of World War II, Korean and Vietnam. He worked at EB for 12 years and ran his own catering business. He was a member of RAFA, VFW and the Fleet Reserve. Samuel had a love for cooking, stamp collecting, fishing and playing cribbage.
      He is survived by his sons, Aaron Sacks, Jack Sacks and Floyd Smeeton; and his daughters, Sherri Lareau, Mindi Matthieu, Jacqueline Tessman, Margo Adams and Deborah Kuhn. His life was also blessed by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also leaves his companion, Joan Lee. He will be greatly missed by Joan's children and his many friends.
      The family would like to thank the staff at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital for the loving care given to Samuel.
      Respecting his wishes, Samuel's ashes will be scattered at sea by the U.S. Navy, returning him to a time in his life that represented the man he was proud to be.
      A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date. Please contact GRASHOPR@SBCGLOBAL.NET for date, time and place.
