    Besides her husband of 52 years, Avis is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Jr. and Darlene Varni of Stafford; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Steve Matthews of East Hartford; two grandsons, Steve Jr. and Christopher, both of East Hartford; a sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Leo Cordier of East Hartford; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Betty Varni of Glastonbury; special friends, Donald "Buzz" and Vicki Brozowsky of East Hartford; several nieces and nephews.
    A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held in the chapel of Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford, on Thursday morning at 10 a.m., with Pastor Joyce Whetstone of Burnside United Methodist Church, East Hartford, officiating. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, East Hartford.

    Frances M. (Banning) Ellsworth, 95, of Portland passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2015 in her home of seventy years. She was the widow of Herbert M. Ellsworth, who predeceased her in 2002, and the daughter of Clinton H. and Hilda C.(Vujs) Banning. Born February 21, 1920 in her home on Hebron Avenue in Glastonbury, she was a 1938 graduate of Glastonbury High School. She worked for Sanborn Map Company in Hartford from 1939 - 1945. Fran and Herb married on May 19, 1943 and in 1945 when Herb returned after serving in the Air Force during WWII, they moved into their Portland home. Fran worked at Wesleyan University, Music Department, as an administrative assistant for 21 years from 1964 to 1985. In her younger years, she was a member of the Portland and Middletown Bowling Leagues, a communicant of St. Mary's Church and member of their Altar Society, a Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary (1954), a 65+year member of both the Auxiliary and Hemlock Grange and a charter member of the Portland Historical Society. She is survived by her three children - son, McClure E. (Linda) Ellsworth of San Antonio TX; daughters, Deborah A. of Framingham MA and Portland and Sarah E. (Gary) Perruccio of Meriden; proud grandmother of Marissa E. (Ted) Schaeffer of San Antonio and Matthew and Mallory Perruccio of Meriden; proud great-grandmother of Hannah, Gio, Eli, Teddy Jr. and Nicole. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Elizabeth P. Ellsworth of Portland and Evelyn Banning of Manchester, many loving nieces and nephews and her extended Texas family: Jeff, Londa and Victoria; Tom, Simon, Dayna and Wesley; Denise and Brian. She was predeceased by her brother, Lewis D. Banning of Manchester. The family would like to thank Middlesex Hospice and Palliative Care for their support and care. Friends and relatives are invited to join her family for a celebration of her Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, October 23, 2015 at 11 AM at St Mary's Church 51 Freestone Ave Portland.     Lewis D. Banning, Sr., of Manchester, died Tuesday, (March 25, 2003) at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of 57 years of Evelyn (Wutsch) Banning. Born in Hartford, son of the late Clinton and Hilda (Vujs) Banning, he was raised in Glastonbury and had resided in Manchester for over 51 years. He was a navy veteran of World War II and was awarded the Silver Star. Mr. Banning had worked for the Manchester Public School System for many years and retired from the communications dept of St. Francis Hospital. He had been an adult leader for the Boy Scouts of America in Troops 27 and 3 in Manchester. He was a member of the Manchester Church of the Nazarene and was active at the Windsor Hill Nazarene Family Camp & Retreat Center in Hillsboro, NH. Besides his wife, he leaves his son, Lewis Banning Jr. and his wife, Rosalyn of Southington; his daughters, Susan Baron of Greensboro, NC, Diane Bliss and her husband, Paul of Glastonbury, and Jane Bernier and her husband, Clifford of Brooklyn; and his daughter-in-law, Lori Banning-Smith and her husband, Stoner Smith of Ellington. He also leaves his grandchildren, Lewis D. Banning III, Andrew and Stacey Baton, Tyler and Amanda Bliss, Pamela and Valerie Banning and Jaime and Thomas Acquavella; his sister, Frances Ellsworth of Portland; and several nieces and nephews.     Doris E. Shaw October 7, 1924 - August 9, 2011 Norwich - Doris E. (Banning) Shaw, 86, wife of the late Arthur L. Shaw Sr., died Tuesday afternoon at her home. Born in East Hartford on October 7, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Clarance and Ethel (Denler) Banning. On May 6, 1942, in Harrisburg, PA she was united in marriage to Arthur L. Shaw, Sr., who died on November 11, 1995. Prior to her retirement she was employed as a Personal Care Aide at the Eliza Huntingtion Home. Mrs. Shaw was also a devoted foster mother to numerous children. Surviving are three sons, William Shaw and his wife Bev of Oakdale, Ronald Shaw and his wife Beth of Jacksonville, FL, and Arthur L.Shaw, Jr. and his wife Pat of Plainfield; two daughters Theresa Fields and her husband David of Norwich and Norene Twerdy and her husband Dean of Putnam, a brother Ronald Banning of Vernon and a sister Phyllis Holzman of New Britain; 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and newphews. She was predeceased by a daughter Gloria Ross, son in law Harold "Skip" Ross, Sr. and a grandson Harold "Skippy" Ross, Jr. Visitation Friday 6 to 8 P.M. at the Labenski Funeral Home, 107 Boswell Ave., Norwich. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday August 20, 2011 at the home of her son and daughter in law William and Bev Shaw, 113 Forsyth Rd., Oakdale at 2 P.M.     Phyllis Marie "Nippy" (Banning) Holzman, 86 of Burlington, CT passed away Sunday, December 20, 2015 with her family by her side at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain, CT. She was a loving, kind and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother and a person who enjoyed her life. Born in Hartford, CT on January 8, 1929 to the late Clarence and Ethel (Dennler) Banning and sister, Doris (Banning) Shaw of Norwich, CT. She leaves behind a brother, Ronald Banning of Vernon, CT and sister-in-law Frances and many nieces and nephews and extended family in the Norwich area. She grew up and attended the local schools in the Glastonbury /Colchester area. She is predeceased by her husband William Carl "Red" Holzman. They married on September 27, 1952 and resided in New Britain, CT where they began their life together and raised their four children William Jr., Wayne, Valerie and Carol. Phyllis worked and retired from Fafnir Bearings in New Britain after 38 years in 1991. After retiring, she moved to Burlington, CT where she lived for over 20 years with her daughter Valerie and son-in-law Ziggy. While living in Burlington, she enjoyed working alongside her daughter at her home daycare where she touched so many of the children's lives and was known to all of them as "Grandma." She enjoyed the warm weather, sitting in the sun on the deck with their dogs, Abbey and Cooper, and taking her daily walks. She looked forward to her Saturday routine of getting her hair done, shopping and having lunch with her daughter Carol. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed by everyone who came to know and love her. Phyllis is survived by two sons William Carl Holzman Jr. and his wife Sandra of East Berlin, and Wayne Allen Holzman and his wife Suzanne Onorato of Simsbury; two daughters, Valerie Spiewak (Holzman) and her husband Ziggy of Burlington, and Carol Holzman of New Britain; six grandchildren, Joseph Grecki and his wife Christine, Erin (Spiewak) Mazzone and her husband Brian, Samantha (Holzman) Boguslawski and her husband Anthony, Katlynn Holzman, William Wayne Holzman and Bennett Francis Holzman; and two great grandchildren, Sophie Elizabeth Mazzone and Case James Grecki. Friends and family are welcome to attend a memorial service in her memory on Saturday January 9, 2016 from 2-4 pm at the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Avenue in New Britain.

Born in Manchester, son of Lewis and Evelyn (Wutsch) Banning, Sr. of Manchester, he was a graduate of Manchester High School, Class of '72, and of Bryant College, Class of '76. He had worked at Tyco International for 19 years. He was a member of the Ellington Community Scholarship Association. Besides his wife and parents, he leaves his daughters, Valerie and Pamela, both at home; his brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Rosalyn Banning, Jr. of Acworth, GA; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Susan and Michael Baron of Greensboro, NC, Diane and Paul Bliss of Glastonbury, and Jane and Clifford Bernier of South Windsor. He also leaves his nieces and nephews, Lewis Banning, III, Andrew and Stacey Baron, Tyler and Amanda Bliss, Jaime and Thomas Acquavella; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. The Banning family thanks the many special coworkers, friends and neighbors who cared for Timothy and his family throughout his illness; and a special thanks to our friend, Dee Trinks.     Gloria Mae Ross June 29, 1942 - January 22, 2008 COLCHESTER _ Gloria Mae Ross, 64, of Lakeview Dr., Colchester, beloved wife of Harold, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 22, 2008) at home. Born June 29,1942 in Hartford, she was a daughter of Doris (Banning) Shaw of Norwich and the late Arthur Shaw. On April 25, 1959, she and Harold were married in Fitchville. Early on, Gloria worked as a nurse's aide in area convalescent homes and went on to be a machinist for Brownell in Moodus. In her spare time, she was an avid reader and doll collector and she also enjoyed camping with her family. In addition to her loving husband of 48 years, she is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Taylor and husband, Robert of Bozrah; three sons, Harold, Jr. and wife, Linda, Robert and wife, Karen and Wayne, all of Colchester; five grandchildren, Kim, Mike, Samantha, Lucas and Haley; two great grandchildren, Zachary and Lauren; two sisters, Terry Fields and Noreen Shaw, both of Norwich; three brothers, Bill of Montville, Ron of Pawcatuck and Art of Plainfield, and numerous extended family members and friends including Judy Kudrak of Middletown and Rose Daniels of Colchester. She will be remembered most for her devotion and love to her husband and family. Friends may call 1 - 3 PM Saturday at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester. A Chapel Service will be held at 2 PM. Burial will be private.     He was predeceased by one sister, Gloria (Shaw) Ross and one nephew, Harold Ross, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Beth Shaw; one daughter, Jamie Smith and her husband, Andy Smith of Florida; two grandchildren, Danny Rorabaugh and Malia Mann of Florida; two brothers, William Shaw and Arthur Shaw, Jr., both of Connecticut; and two sisters, Terri Fields and Norene Twendy, both of Connecticut.
    Ron was employed at Electric Boat for 40 years. After he retired he and his wife moved to Jacksonville, Florida to be with his daughter and grandchildren where he worked in hospitality for 8 years.
    Ron?s past times included listening to his records, watching NASCAR and rooting for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
    Ron touched MANY hearts and was loved and respected by everyone who met him.
