SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. - John E. Widness, 87, of Sun City Center, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 12, 2001, two days after sustaining a stroke. He was born in Wilmington, Vt., on July 24, 1914, to Edward J. and Marie Widness. He grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., but spent summers with his family at Lake Raponda in Wilmington until graduation from college. In 1937 he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. He worked for the Department of the Navy in Washington from 1941-54 and for General Electric in Lynn, Mass., until he retired in 1977. After retiring, he lived in Guilford, Vt., from 1980-86 where he was an active member of the West Brattleboro Congregational Church. In subsequent years, he and his wife lived in Sun City Center. Throughout his life Mr. Widness was an active volunteer in numerous civic and church organizations. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Katherine (Davis) Widness, to whom he was married Jan. 1, 1943; two brothers, Andrew C. Widness of Wilmington, and Edward M. Widness of Rowayton, Conn.; a son, John A. Widness of Iowa City, Iowa; a daughter, Karen Baker of Valrico; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Burial of his remains by the Covey & Allen Funeral Home in Wilmington is planned for July 2002 in Riverview Cemetery Wilmington.
