Edgar Smith
Edgar L. Smith, of 622 Michaelis St., Marinette, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 16, 2008. He preached, served and loved so much. Edgar was born in Melstrand, Mich., to the late Robert Smith and Ethel M. Perry on June 12, 1924.
Edgar was a World War II veteran and served in London, where he was injured and spent 20 months in the hospital before returning to the states. Edgar was also a Church of God Minister and Evangelist for 46 years of his life. Edgar was a loving husband, father, step-father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was known for his beautiful smile, among other things. He had a talent for whittling and made beautiful fans, hand-carved and other things. His research and study of God's word occupied so many of his hours. He was talented in so many ways.
Edgar worked many years in the U.P. and Lower Michigan. He was skilled at whatever jobs he had. He became a minister in the mid-1950's. He met so many wonderful people, was loved very much and honored for his work for the Kingdom. He was instrumental in starting the Menominee Church of God with Rev. Wayne Akin in 1964. After becoming ill, he resided at Rennes-East in Peshtigo for three years with the help of the wonderful nurses, CNA's and hospice caregivers. They loved him and treated him with dignity.
Edgar (Ed) is survived by his wife, Diane, and a large family: Robert (Janet) Smith of Gwinn, Mich., Brett (Tammy) Smith of Manistique, Mich., Andrew Smith of Las Vegas, Nev., Ray (Shawn) Smith of Curtis, Mich.; one daughter, Katherine (Rev. Ronald) Oberle of Newberry, Mich.; one brother, Earl
Smith of Phoenix, Ariz.; four step-sons: Kevin (Mary) Kakuk of Green Bay, Brian (Cindy) Kakuk, Rick Kakuk and Joe (Barb) Kakuk, all of Menominee.; a step-grandson, Christopher (Morgan) Matthews; step-great-grandchildren: Michael and Tylore Matthews of Colorado and foster grandsons: Scott
Bernhardt and Steven Burns. He was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters, three daughters: Theresa Smith, Sharon Smith and Rose Frank; a son, Stephen Smith and a granddaughter, Annie. Edgar has many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.
A celebration of his life will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2008, in Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home, Marinette, with Rev. Ron Oberle and Rev. Robert Jewett officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the 20-Year Club. Friends may call at the funeral home after 11 a.m. on Friday.
We wish to thank all the caregivers and all who loved him. The hospice, CNA nurse Donna, Social workers, Elaine and his chaplain, Kathy, RN and the other wonderful nurses of Unit 7-1. To all of you who cared for him, may God bless all of you for your wonderful compassion. How he loved sharing the Lord with so many and how he also loved their input and stories. The family thanks all of you with love and appreciation for the talent you use every day. Not to forget Steve, the dietician, who concerns himself with every resident's care and nutrition as well as the wonderful meals. Thanks Steve, for your care of Edgar.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
