L.P. Dobbs

L.P. was born October 24, 1912, the 12th of13 children of Caroline (Hart-Shortland) and John William Dobbs on the family homestead in Golden Valley. He grew up and attended school to grade eight in Golden Valley. His mother died when he was only 10 and a year later at age 11 his father sent him out to work in the logging camps. At the tender age of 16 he opened his first business - The Hummingbird Ice Cream Parlour where he sold cigarettes, pop and ice cream. After ice cream he expanded to the mechanics business by purchasing Ellesmere's Garage. Around this time he met and dated his brother Fred's housekeeper, Laura McConnell. The two were married in 1935 at Powassan United Church and lived all their life together in Golden Valley. Also in 1935 L.P. took on a Shell Oil distributorship and in 1939 he became a licensed mechanic. His little ice cream parlour eventually evolved into a general store selling everything from clothing to supplies and credit was extended to all who needed it. L.P. 's leisure time was devoted to the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing at Long Lake, on the 200 acres his father had given him. His hunt camp became
popular with hunters from as far away as United States and was a source ofboth money and fun for L.P. L.P. was also active in his community, as a lifelong member ofSt. Paul's United Church, as a charter member ofthe Argyle Lions Club, as a member ofthe local Orange Lodge and as a dedicated Mason for 50 years. He was responsible for starting the fire department in Golden Valley by donating the first truck and pump. Ironically L.P. lost both his store and garage in a fire in 1969 but the fire department managed to save his home, L.P. Dobbs was an upstanding man who will be remembered for his kindness, his gentleness and his strength.
