    Brenton P. Thurston, 90, of Wethersfield Commons, died May 1, 2008. He was the husband of Helen A. (Lewis) Thurston. They were married for 66 years.
    Born in Newport, he was the son of the late Donald P. Thurston and Blenda (Hendrickson) Thurston. He was a Warwick resident since 1952. He is of the 10th generation in direct decent from Edward Thurston, who was born in England in 1617, emigrated to America and settled in Newport in 1647.
    Mr. Thurston was active in Scouting, having joined in 1930. He was elevated to Eagle Scout in January 1933. At that time he was named youngest Eagle Scout in the State of Rhode Island. He continued in Scouting until 1952, when he moved to Warwick. As a young Eagle Scout he represented the Boy Scouts of Newport as an aide to several governors and also met personally several notable people, including Sir Thomas Lipton of yachting fame, Admiral Richard E. Byrd, noted Arctic & Antarctic explorer, the twin Swiss scientists August and Jean Picard, one a balloonist and the other an undersea explorer.
    He graduated from Rogers High School, Class of 1936. He also attended the University of Rhode Island. Mr. Thurston retired as an aerospace engineer from the Naval Air Station at Quonset Point upon the base closing in 1973 after 33? years of service. He also worked for Citizens Bank for over eight years, retiring in 1985.
    Mr. Thurston was a Navy veteran of World War II, enlisting in early 1942 and serving nearly four years in the American and Asia-Pacific Theatres, leaving the Navy as an aviation machinist mate first class.
    An active philatelist, he served as president of the Newport Armed Services YMCA Stamp Club. Upon moving to Warwick, he joined the Rhode Island Philatelic Society and is a past president of that organization. In April 1977 he was selected to be a member of the Webster Knight Stamp Committee, whose United States collection is in the John Hay Library at Brown University. He served as a senior member of that committee, overseeing all the stamp collections in the library. He will be awarded posthumously the William Williams Award, which is the highest honor that the Brown University Library can bestow.
    Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Penick and her husband, Stephen, of Bradenton, Fla., Nancy Roy and her husband, Geoffrey, of Warwick and Lorraine Caporaletti and her husband, Robert, of North Providence; and a son, Brenton P. Thurston and his wife, Barbara, of Providence. He had 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of Elizabeth Yarosz of Spencer, Mass. and the late Sonya Byers and Malcolm D. Thurston.
    His funeral service will be held May 7 at 10 a.m. in Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Chapel, 2435 Warwick Ave. Burial will be in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours are May 6 from 4-7 p.m.
