Arnold M. Chappell Sr., 83, of Music Vale Road, Salem, passed away on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at Harrington Court in Colchester.
Mr. Chappell was born on June 20, 1931, in Waterford, the son of the late Elmer and Elsie (Maynard) Chappell.
He was married to Alice (Buell) Chappell on Sept. 26, 1956, in New London. Alice died on Aug. 8, 2005.
Arnold had spent the majority of his career as a dairy farmer in Salem, then retired after nine years from Pfizer Inc. in Groton.
He was very well known and active throughout Connecticut and New England agriculture fairs in oxen pulling contests.
His survivors include his daughter, Christine Brooks and her husband, Thomas, of Plainfield; his son, Arnold M. Chappell Jr. and his wife, Debra, of Salem; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters and two brothers.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Jordan Cemetery in Waterford. There are to be no visiting hours.

Alice L. Chappell, 80, of 246 Music Vale Road, Salem, died Monday at Harrington Court in Colchester.
She was born July 22, 1925 in New London, the daughter of John H. and Christian Rae Buell.
Mrs. Chappell attended Chapman Technical School and was the class valedictorian in 1943. While in school she had worked at Miss Prescott's Bake Shop and then at Vogt's Bakery. During the World War II she worked at Electric Boat in Groton and then was a clerical worker for Metropolitan Life Insurance in New London.
She married Arnold M. Chappell Sr. at the Huntington Street Baptist Church in New London on Sept. 26, 1956.
In addition to her husband Arnold, she is survived by a son, Arnold M. Chappell Jr., of Salem; a daughter, Christine B. Brooks, of Plainfield; a brother, Richard Buell, of Norwell, Mass.; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at noon on Friday at the Jordan Cemetery, Waterford. There are no calling hours.

Elsie M. Chappell, 91, of Music Vale Rd., died Tuesday (Dec. 11, 2001) at the Nutmeg Pavilion in New London.
She was born on Dec. 26, 1909 in East Haddam, a daughter of the late Herbert and Evalina (Miner) Maynard.
She was married to the late Elmer P. Chappell on Mar. 2, 1929. They first lived in Waterford, then moved to Montville and finally settled in Salem where they owned and operated their family dairy farm known as Chappell's Dairy.
Mrs. Chappell was a charter member of the Chesterfield Fire Company Auxillary. She enjoyed gardening and loved flowers.
She is survived by three sons, Arnold Chappell, Melvin Chappell and Herbert Chappell; all of Salem; four daughters, Louise Caton of Salem, June Roselund of Heath, MA, Shirley Chappell of Sterling and Linda Walker of Salem; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren and numerous extended family and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Walter Chappell, a grandchild, a great-grandchild and three brothers, Kenneth, Wallace and Marvin Maynard.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 14th at 10 AM at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Rd., Colchester. Burial will follow in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford. Calling hours are Thursday evening from 5-8 PM. Donations in her memory may be made to the Salem Vol. Fire Dept., Hartford Rd., Salem 06420.
