Margaret Wood met James Allen at the Avenue Road Church in Toronto where Charles Templeton was pastor. Circumstances led to her becoming pregnant and with the help of the pastor her father was able to put an end to the relationship. At the time Margaret may have known or not have known that James was married. She told the family years later that he had a wife named Lillian and 2 children and a brother named Joe. She didn't know when he was born or his exact age. An inquiry to the York Children's Aid Society stated that he was approximately 40 years old at the time of Alfred's adoption in 1956. Margaret was born in 1926 so James was 18 years older. Children's Aid indicated James had paid support and had visitation rights up until the adoption.
Alfred was born in March 1948 so his parents met in 1947. Alf's mother's maiden name was Wood and that was the name Alf was given at birth. His mother married Douglas Reginald Mann and then an adoption was done in 1956 that changed Alf's surname from Wood to Mann. Douglas Mann died in 1959. Margaret met Jimmy Allen at the Avenue Road Church in Toronto during the time period that Charles Templeton had a thriving congregation. Margaret named her son Alfred Charles, the Charles being for Charles Templeton.
