JOHNSON, Carl E. Carl E. Johnson, 83, of Newington, passed away at home on October 14, 2009, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease and complications from a recent stroke. He was predeceased by his wife Janet, and a son, David. Carl was born in Hartford on March 26, 1926, and lived in Newington for the past 40 years. He attended Hartford Public High School and Wesleyan University, graduating with a B.S. in Mathematics in 1946. He was employed as an underwriter at CNA Insurance for 42 years before retiring in April 1988. A devoted member of the Church of Christ Congregational of Newington, he was involved in several aspects of church life, including the choir, "Jolly Gents", and other volunteer activities. Carl loved music and sang with the Newington Choral Club for many years. After retiring, Carl enjoyed spending his winters in Fort Myers, FL. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Besides his late wife and son, he leaves three sons, Carl D. Johnson and his wife Nancy Bouchard of Columbia, Paul A. Johnson of Newington, and Mark R. Johnson and his girlfriend Carol Burke of San Marcos, CA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Kenneth Loveland of West Hartford and Barbara and Donald Melander of Vernon; and three grandchildren, Eric Loveland and his wife Athina of Newington, Bonnie Loveland and her companion Pam Barnhart of Sunbury, PA, and Peter Melander of Vernon, as well as several nieces and nephews. Carl also leaves his beloved companion, Joan Feldmann of Newington. A memorial service celebrating Carl's life will be held on Sunday, October 18, at 2 p.m. at Church of Christ Congregational of Newington, 1075 Main St., Newington, 06111. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to his church or to the Alzheimer's Association.
