Survived by her dependable, attentive brother John (Holly), sister Alberta Lougheed (Ken), sister Helen Lougheed (Ted) and brother-in-law Bob Lougheed. She leaves 10 nieces & nephews, 23 great nieces & nephews and 10 great, great nieces & nephews. Predeceased by her parents John and Mabel Welch, sisters Joan Lougheed and Gladys Preston and brother-in-law Gary Preston. For years Ruth so enjoyed sitting in her car at Block House Island enjoying the St. Lawrence River, watching the big ships while visiting with others. Ruth did have a good sense of humour and had much fun at family get-togethers. She loved yellow roses and orchids. While at Sherwood Park Manor, Ruth quite enjoyed playing bingo and winning! It gave her great pleasure to watch a variety of birds perch at her birdfeeders. Cremation has taken place, arrangements entrusted through Eternal Care Ltd. Visitation at 11 a.m. and funeral service at 11:45 a.m. on Sat. August 10, 2024 at Christ United Church Hall, Perth St., Lyn, Ont. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery with a reception after internment back at the Church hall. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to Sherwood Park Manor Nursing Home would be appreciated by the family. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the staff members of Sherwood Park Manor Nursing Home for their excellent care of Ruth. We know it wasn't always easy. | 1057 | | Sally Walters CITY OF POUGHKEEPSIE - Sally Walters, 79, of the City of Poughkeepsie, passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. A local resident since 1958, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Sally was actively involved with Alcoholics Anonymous and recently celebrated 36 years of service. She was affectionately known as "Suitcase Sally "in the rooms of AA and helped many along the path of recovery. Sally gave her wisdom, strength and hope freely and often. Her "home group" was Poughkeepsie Original on Wilbur Blvd. and ran the welcome group on Mill Street. She volunteered her time and resources to M.A.R.C. Soberingup, Bolger House, Greymoore, St. Josephs and Joe's House to name a few. Sally taught the drunk driving course years ago. She opened her heart and home to those seeking and in need of recovery. The good Lord needed and Angel and he called upon Suitcase Sally Walters who will be sorely missed and in the Hearts of many. Born in Vermont on Feb. 1, 1931, she was the daughter of William and Hazel Walton Knight. She was a graduate of Richmond High School in Burlington, VT. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Livingston of Stewart, FL; a son, Clayton Walters of Bayard, IO; daughters and sons in law, Gisele and Wayne Emmett of LaGrange; Elissa and Jeffrey Fishwick of Stanfordville; sons, Steven Walters of Poughkeepsie and Phillip Dennis Walters, of Poughkeepsie; her grandchildren, David, Christopher, Matthew and Cassandra Walters, Phillip and Michelle Emmett, Erica, Sarah, Tyler and Amy Fishwick and Rebecca Walters. Two sisters, Eliza Simard, Springfield, MA and Nan Benker of Middletown, NY; a brother, Emery Knight of Magraw, NY, several nieces and nephews and a daughter in law, Sue Walters of Schenectady, also survive her. | 1058 | | Salmon Arm Fatal Salmon Arm Fatal by Wayne Moore - Story: 32747 August 16, 2007 / 11:00 am A Kitimat woman is dead following a spectacular three vehicle accident on Highway 1 just west of Salmon Arm Wednesday evening. Salmon Arm RCMP Sergeant, Eric Castle, says the accident occurred about 9 p.m. when a westbound White Ford SUV was spotted travelling in the on-coming lane. "A grey Honda van travelling east on the Highway, driven by a Kitimat man, took evasive action but collided with the SUV," says Castle. A third vehicle, also travelling east, also collided with the Honda it was following." He says all three vehicles involved extensive damage. Castle says a Kitimat woman, in the front passenger seat of the Honda, died as a result of her injuries. "The driver of the SUV is under investigation for impaired driving and is at present being held in Salmon Arm police custody." No word on the condition of the other people involved. | |

Banning OER Official, Dies In Hospital Samuel Rae Banning, claims adjuster for the Ottawa Electric Railway since 1934, died this morning at a local hospital at the age of 66 years. Mr. Banning has been with the OER since June 20, 1905, starting as a streetcar conductor. He was advanced to the position of inspector in 1913, and became claims adjuster in 1934. He held the latter post up to the time of his death. Mr. Banning had been ailing since November 1946. Born at Arnprior on March 3, 1880, the son of Thomas Banning and Sarah Rae, he came to Ottawa 42 years ago, and entered the service of the OER almost immediately. Mr. Banning received his education in Arnprior. During his long residence in the Capital, Mr. Banning made a host of friends in all walks of life, who mourn his passing with a keen sense of personal loss. Prominent Mason Prominent in Masonic circles Mr. Banning was a member of the Chaudiere Lodge, of which he was a past master and former secretary. He was also a member of Rose Croix, and a member of the Canadian Club of Ottawa. Mr. Banning worshipped at Stewarton United church. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Rebecca Mary Ray, in November 1945. He resided at 57 Harmer avenue. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Robert Walker, 516 Highland avenue, a sister, Mrs. George Sims, Kimberly, BC, and four grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock in the chapel of Hulse and Playfair, Limited, 315 McLeod street. Rev. F. S. Milliken, minister of Stewarton church, will officiate. | 1064 | | Sarah Coxford Mrs. Herb Coxford A long time resident of Almonte, Sarah Ila Scott Coxford passed away at the Almonte Nursing Home, after a lengthy illness, on Monday November 4th. in her 88th year. Born at Clayton, Ontario, on April 12th 1887, she was the eldest daughter of William Henry Scott and Rachel Evans. Several years later the family moved to Almonte. In 1910 she married Herbert L. Coxford, of Almonte, who predeceased her in 1964. She was a member of Almonte United Church and in her younger years took part in many organizations of the Church. She is survived by one son, and three daughters: Edwin, Winnipeg; Elizabeth (Mrs R. Duncan), Almonte; Kathleen (Mrs C. M. Thomson) Mississauga; Ruth. (Mrs K. Fresque), Ottawa; and twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Surviving is a sister, Bessie (Mrs George Van Iderstine), Saskatoon. Four brothers and one sister predeceased her, Harvey, Eddie, Alston, James and Lucy (Mrs Frank Snow) the funeral was held November 6th, 1974, from the Kerry Funeral Home in Almonte, rev Robert McCrea of the Almonte United Church conducted the service. They had a long distance relationship for four years while she attended university in Winnipeg. When she graduated and took a job, he followed her to Winnipeg. He found a job and immediately proposed and then he was laid off. They married on June 28, 1986 and he found a job at Westburne Electric that fall. They bought a house in Norwood and in August 1991, their daughter Sarah was born. When she was three, they moved to Windsor Park and a year later, got a dog (Bernie). Gladys's sisters had moved to Winnipeg and Steve was always helping them with their homes. Steve had many friends and was always ready to help with any project they had going. Steve was active in raising Sarah and helped coach her softball team and took her to skating lessons. She always had both parents at every swimming competition or school function. Steve loved the outdoors and enjoyed going to Val and Brian's cottage. He enjoyed fishing off the dock at Vern and Jill's cottage. He loved his outdoor fireplace and most Friday's you could find him sitting in front of the fire. Steve attended church with Gladys and hearing the sermon was most important to him. After his illness, it kept him away from church because of comfort, where he found church programs on TV to watch. When we realized he would be leaving work and going on disability, we bought a 7 year old dog (Chandler) to keep him company as Bernie had passed away a year earlier. Steve always believed in helping where he could and treating people right and didn't expect anything in return. He will be greatly missed. Mrs. Swalwell passed away at her home on Wednesday night, March 24, following a lengthy illness. She was 83 years of age. Pallbearers were three grandsons of the deceased lady, Harvey, Milton and Clarence McConnell, and three nephews, Edgar, Herbert and Wesley Edwards. Interment was made in Terrace Lawn cemetery. Born near Pembroke, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Edwards, she was married in 1881 to the late Anthony A. Swalwell, who predeceased her seven years ago. They lived in Restoule for 40 years prior to coming to North Bay in 1927. Surviving Mrs. Swalwell are two sons, Walter, North Bay; Cpl. Thomas Swalwell, Carr, Ontario; and six daughters, Mrs. C. Sylvia King was born March 5, 1896, six miles west of Reed City and attended the local schools for years. August 14, 1913, she was married to Hiram L. Perry in Big Rapids and since that time had made her home in Greenville. The remains were brought to Reed City Tuesday and taken to the home of her uncle, Frank Samis. The funeral services were held from the house Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock, Elder W.C. Wood of the Mormon church in Chicago officiating. Burial was in the Chase Cemetery beside the grave of her father. (Ted or T.C. to his many friends and colleagues), age 90, passed away on July 24 at El Castillo retirement community in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he will be missed by many friends. Ted was born and grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Following his high school graduation, he attended Michigan Technological University for one quarter and then enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the 10th Mountain Division in WWII. On returning from service in Europe, he enrolled in Civil Engineering at Michigan State University, following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps. While there, he met and married Dora McKibben. He graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering, crediting Dora with getting him through calculus. After graduation he returned to Grand Rapids to work with his father, W.B. Williams, at Williams & Works. Ted became Chairman and, with his brother-in-law Everett Thompson, helped to guide that firm to prominence in consulting engineering, urban planning, and surveying. The firm served clients in the United States and beyond, including in Bermuda. In 1966 he and his family took a year-long working sabbatical to New Zealand, where he assisted the City of Christchurch Drainage Board in establishing an engineering investigations department. He returned to Grand Rapids in 1967 and resumed his leadership of Williams & Works. During his tenure, the firm won two national awards for the most significant engineering projects of the year. After retiring in 1986, he and Dora moved to Santa Fe, where Ted enjoyed skiing at least as many days per year as he was years old, sometimes traveling to South America or New Zealand in the summer to achieve this goal. Not content with recreation alone, Ted maintained an interest in water resources and developed a well-received proposal for increasing water flow in the Santa Fe River. Ted is survived by his wife, Dora, of Santa Fe, NM; his sisters, Harriet of Newtown Square, PA, and Janet (Everett Thompson) of Grand Rapids; a son, Steve, and his wife, Linda, of Grand Rapids; his daughters, Emily (Mark Ewing), of Newton, MA, and Marcia (Greg Ruppel), of Santa Fe, NM. Surviving grandchildren include Perry Williams (Jason) Pursell, Alexander (Alexandra) Williams, Halley Ruppel, Kelsey Ruppel, Hannah Ewing, and Aaron Ewing, and great-grandchildren Nolan and Arabella Pursell. | 1094 | | The Late James McClelland The Late James McClelland The death of James McClelland, which occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday October 20, removed from the Adirondacks a man who had been identified with the growth and prosperity of the village of Saranac Lake during practically it's entire existence. Born in the County Armagh, Ireland, in 1831, he removed with his parents to Canada when an infant, and, before reaching his majority, married Mary E. Wise, and settled in a small lumbering district in the heart of the then comparatively unknown Adirondack wilderness. For thirty years he followed the business of guiding during the summer and lumbering in the winter. As a guide Mr. McClelland always ranked among the honorable and trustworthy in the profession, and was employed by some of the best parties that came to the woods. The fact that he was often engaged by the same parties season after season is sufficient proof that the services he rendered gave satisfaction. As time advanced, the little lumbering district developed into the enterprising Saranac Lake village of today. Its early growth was slow, and the amusements to be enjoyed during the long winter evenings were few. Mr. McClelland was possessed of much natural ability and wit, and his fund of interesting anecdotes and experiences were ever in demand. For a considerable time he was the regular contributor to the Troy Daily Times, the Essex County Republican and other publications. He was often called upon to speak at the debating societies, to which he always belonged and which he greatly assisted in keeping alive and interesting. When the only religious services at Saranac Lake were the Union meetings held at the school house, Mr. McClelland was a regular attendant, and always contributed to the support of the preacher, not only at the Sunday collections, but at church socials and by subscriptions as well. He had a remarkably good understanding of the Bible, and for a long time was the Bible class teacher in the Sunday School. He has a kindly and sympathetic heart, was a friendly and obliging neighbor and a worthy and respected citizen. He was the father of a large family for whom he had the deepest affection and whom he educated to the best of his ability. During the school session his children seldom were absent, and always ranked well in their studies, causing him to entertain in them a natural and justifiable pride. His pleasantest and happiest hours were those enjoyed at his home fireside, surrounded by his wife and children. He will be missed not only by those of his home circle, but by his many friends and acquaintances throughout this portion of the Adirondacks. Mr. McClelland is survived by his widow and nine children, two sons and seven daughters, who have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. The funeral service was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church on Friday, Oct. 22, and was conducted by the Rev. Clarence Miller, assisted by the Rev. Theresa was born in Meriden, CT. to the late Jacob and Sophie (Baziak) Barnas. Theresa was married to the late Leroy Warner and her three children were born from this union. Later in life she met and married the late Edwin L. Jerome Jr. She retired from Pratt & Whitney after more than 20 years of service and was a faithful member of Truth & Freedom Ministry in Windsor, CT where she was also the church secretary. After her retirement she ran a neighborhood day care from her home. She was a treasured companion assisting her daughter at ? Pampered Chef Shows? Theresa and her family enjoyed many summers vacationing in Maine, she was an avid cook, knitter and had a passion for holiday crafts. Her home was kept in away which made all who entered feel welcomed. Theresa was called ?Mother Theresa? by her family and close friends, because of the unconditional love she had for her children and friends. Although she hasn?t spoken in many years, many caregivers and passersby remarked on her warm comforting smile, there was a light within her no disease could extinguish. She leaves to cherish her memories; sons, David (Pamela) Warner of San Diego, CA, and Paul Warner of Knoxville TN; daughter, Kimberly (David) Lingenheld of Bloomfield, CT and step- son Rusty Jerome of Milwaukee, WI ; six grandchildren; Sarah, Colton, Clarissa, Daniel, Taylor, Brianna and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
