| 752 | | Victoria M. LeMay Victoria M. LeMay BARRE: Victoria M. LeMay, 95, of Springfield, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 10, 2006, at the Menig Extended Care Facility in Randolph. She was born Nov. 29, 1911, in Barre, the daughter of Lewis & Olive (Martin) Damon. She was raised in Barre and attended Northfield Seminary, receiving her teaching degree from Wheelock College. She was married to Madison F. Boyce, then Raphael J. LeMay, both of whom predeceased her. She taught piano and voice and directed church choirs in Barre, Montpelier and Springfield. She was instrumental in the formation of public kindergarten in the Barre school system. She moved from Barre to Springfield in 1950. She was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Barre and Springfield, as well as the Springfield Community Players, Descendants of the Mayflower and the Altrurian Club. Survivors include her son, Madison L. Boyce of Randolph; daughter, Patricia LaPointe of Lakeview, Mass.; and three grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers, Dr. Raymond Martin, Hildred Martin and Proctor Martin, and one grandchild. Memorial Services in Springfield will be announced at a later date. There are no calling hours. Private burial will be at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Springfield Community Chorus, Springfield Community Players or to the church. | 753 | | Vineta Jensen Vineta (Lucas) 'Skeeter' Jensen, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville where she has been residing for the past year. Vineta was born October 9, 1909, in Preston, Iowa. She was the only child of George Lucas and Mabel (Purinton) Lucas and came to Estherville in 1914, with her parents. She was educated in the Estherville Schools and in business school in Chillicothe, Missouri. She was an employee of the Emmet County State Bank during the "famous" bank robbery in 1930. On November 11, 1930, she was married to Herman A. 'Jack' Jensen and to this union two daughters were born. Judith Lynne (Mrs. George Shadle) and Roxanne Lucas (Mrs. John Powers III). Vineta had four grandchildren, Randy Shadle, Susan Shadle Oster, Robin Powers Kinning and Nicole Powers. There are also six great-grandchildren surviving. Vineta was predeceased by her husband of 80 years and her granddaughter, Nicole Powers. Vineta was a member of First Presbyterian Church, member and past officer in P.E.O., D.A.R. and Eastern Star. | |

| 755 | | Viola Auler Viola J. Auler, 79, Kokomo, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Friday, December 18, 2015 at her home. She was born May 18, 1936 in Curtisville, IN to Wilson Mack and Viola Rachael (Pennock) Sherman. A 1955 Markleville High School Graduate, Viola went on to work in department 88 for Delco Electronics retiring in 1991 after 27 years of service. She loved cats and was known to be ?the cat lady?. Viola also enjoyed traveling, gardening, antique collecting, camping, photography, collecting and making dolls and typing on an old Royal typewriter. She enjoyed bowling and was a member of a bowling league in Alexandria, IN. In her youth, Viola was involved in 4-H which lead to her support of Purdue University. She was also involved in Lapidary Arts and jewelry making as well as a member of the Wildcat Creek Geological Society. These interests lead her to serve as secretary for the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Society. She is survived by a son, Richard William Auler Jr; daughter, Theresa J. Auler; grandchildren, Jill Elayne Auler, Amber Nicole Auler and Rickhara ?Khara? Marie Viola Lee Auler; great-granddaughter, Khalyna Prush; sister, Isabel Reynolds; brother, Ira Wilson Sherman; and ex-husband, Richard William (Mary) Auler Sr. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Dennis Roy Auler. Bangle, 51, route 2 Elwood, died at 8 o'clock Wednesday night at Mercy Hospital following an illness of several months. Born March 24, 1908 in Battle Creek, Mich., she was the daughter of Ira and Fannie Pennock. She was married to Clarence Bangle August 20, 1943, who survives. She was a member of the Christian church in Battle Creek. Survivors include the husband, two daughters, Mrs. Isabel Reynolds, of Rigdon, and Mrs. Jane Auler of Alexandria, two sons Ira Sherman, Elwood, and Mack A. Sherman, Windfall, two step-children, Arthur Bangle, Tipton and Mrs. Nora Mull, Elwood, two brothers, Leo Pennock, Athens, Mich. And Milo Pennock, of Battle Creek, Mich.: a sister, Mrs. Lydia Smith of Battle Creek, Mich.: ten grandchildren, and four step-grandchildren. The body is at the Copher and Fesler funeral home. Mrs. Burnap was a homemaker and a member of Brookdale Wesleyan Church. Born in April 1916, in the town of Stockholm, daughter of Harlie and Martha Price Steenburg, she attended Brasher-Stockholm schools. She married Herald E. Burnap on Oct. 2, 1936, at Massena with the Rev. Walter Page officiating. Mr. Burnap , a longtime farmer in the Winthrop area, died May 21, 1977. Surviving are two sons and their wives, Duane and Carol Ann, Winthrop, and Leon and Patricia, Norfolk; two daughters and a son-in-law, Betty Lecuyer, Winthrop, and Ellen and William Young, South Butler; two sisters, Arlene Woods and Sylvia Quinville, both of Massena; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. | 762 | | Violet Hazelwood Violet Hazelwood died peacefully at her home in Powassan on Tuesday, March 16, 2021. She was in her 90th year. Violet (Byers) was predeceased by her husband Eric Sydney Hazelwood. She was the beloved mother of Karen Cobb of Airdrie, AB, Doug Hazelwood of Powassan and Marilyn Parker (Evan) of Suamico, WI. Violet was the much-loved grandmother of Sarah Sehl (Matt) and Matthew Cobb, all of Alberta, and Megan and Molly Parker of Wisconsin. She will be lovingly remembered by great-grandchildren (twins) Kya and Jayce Sehl of Alberta. Violet was the dear sister of Wilda Byers of Dunnville, Sam Byers (Ethel) of Dunnville, Wilburn Byers of North Bay, Gwen Hazelwood (Clarence) of Renfrew and Marjorie Trainer of North Bay. She will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Violet was predeceased by her parents Agnes (McConnell) and Levi Byers; by her sisters Gladys Mason (the late Tom), Evelyn Byers and Greta Bayliss (the late Hector); and by her brothers Andrew and Tom Byers. | 763 | | Virginia Bostwick Virginia Eileen Bostwick died with her loving family close by, on May 22, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. She fought cancer the way she lived her life with all of her strength and determination. Eileen was sustained throughout her life by her deep faith in God. Eileen was born March 8th, 1926 in Tillamook, Oregon to Rev. B. Ross and Ruth Evans. She began her schooling there and in 1934 the family moved to Corbett, Oregon where she attended Corbett Grade School. She later spent a year in Eugene, Oregon until the family moved to Hood River in 1936. Eileen graduated from Hood River High School in 1944. After graduation she was employed at the United Telephone Company of Hood River. Eileen was married to George E. Bostwick September 9, 1946. George had been Eileen's High School sweetheart and recently returned from serving in the Navy during WWII. Eileen and George had two children, Tom Bostwick of Hood River and Annette Owen of Independence, Missouri. After Tom was born Eileen and George moved to Sweet Home, Oregon for several years where George was employed in the lumber business. They returned to Hood River and bought a home on Belmont Drive. After building a new home on the same Belmont property they adopted a sister for Tom. Annett Bostwick Owen. George was employed with the United Postal Service until he retired. Eileen and George were longtime members of the Valley Christian Church where they were very active in the church. Later they joined the Odell Baptist Church and Eileen became the church organist and were very active members. They later transferred to the Tucker Road Baptist Church where Eileen became the organist there. They were both very active in the church until George's death in 2004. Eileen continued playing the church organ until her health kept her from participating. When George retired from the Postal Service they bought a home on Eliot Drive. They both loved to travel and they took many wonderful trips throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They enjoyed several trips to Hawaii. Eileen's greatest loves were her music, sewing, her flower garden and being a devoted wife and mother. Eileen had many accomplishments in her lifetime and had many friends. She was a volunteer at the Hood River Historical Museum, a member of the Hood River Historical Society, and a member of the Tucker Road Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Eileen was preceded in death by her brother B. Ross (Pat) Evans, killed in WWII on Guam. Eileen is survived and will be dearly missed by her son, Tom Bostwick and daughter Annette Owen; brother, Rev. Fred Evans of Corvallis; sisters, Ruth Wickensham of Jacksonville, Florida and Dorothy Radliff of Hood River; grandchildren, Marsha Schneider, Mary Bostwick, Josh Owen Becca Deeds and other distant family members. Funeral Services will be held at the Hood River Valley Christian Church ( 975 Indian Creek Road) at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 29th, 2009. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Anyone wishing to attend the internment should gather at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron, by 9:30 a.m. Monday. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Virginia Riley Purinton was born Oct. 1, 1914, in Moline, the daughter of Rolla G. and Hazel M. Riley Purinton. Virginia graduated from Moline High School in 1932. She attended Augustana College and graduated from Rockford College in 1936. She attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a Master of Arts degree in graphic arts under the direction of Grant Wood. She toured Europe to study art in England, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. She taught at the universities of South Dakota, Maryville, Tenn., and Burlington, Iowa. She taught art and French until the time of her marriage to her childhood sweetheart, H. Keith Speckman, on June 5, 1946 in Moline. They moved to Port Byron, where they built their home and raised their two daughters. In 1963, the Little Flower Shop owned by Keith and Virginia became the first full-service florist in Port Byron, serving the entire area of upper Rock Island County and continuing in business until 2000. She belonged to the former Elsie Chapter of Eastern Star, Rose Lodge. She was a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International and supported her husband's activities in the rotary. Survivors include her husband; daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Pierre Habis, Slidell, La., Karen and Allen Dippel, Davenport; grandson, Carl (Tresa) Habis, Center Point, Ore.; granddaughter, Angelique Habis, San Francisco, Calif.; two great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Joan Speckman, Port Byron; a niece, Margie; nephew, Marcus. Vivian was predeceased by her husband Fred, her son Fred Jr, and her granddaughter Sarah. She leaves her loving daughters Kathy, Susan (Paul Harding), as well as daughter-in-law Michelle Fisher. She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Chantelle, Emily (Keveh Nicholls), Jennifer, and Evan (Laura Jansons). | 769 | | Vivian Groves Vivian Groves, 92 of Chappell, Nebraska died early Friday morning, December 10, 2010 at the Miller Memorial Care Center in Chappell. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, December 14, 2010 in the Chappell United Methodist Church with Pastor Ezekiel Koech officiating. Burial will follow in the Chappell Cemetery. Vivian was born on November 2, 1918 to William Howard and Elva E. (Sterns) Rice on a farm southeast of Chappell, Nebraska. She was raised on a farm north of Ovid, Colorado. She attended the Ovid public schools and was the salutatorian of the 1937 graduating class at Ovid High School. After high school, Vivian went to work as a librarian in the Ovid Library through the W.P.A. On November 22, 1938 she married John Kenneth Groves in Wray, Colorado. The couple lived in the Goodview area for five years. Then in 1943, they bought her father-in-law's farm where she and her husband raised their two daughters. In 2002 her husband passed away and in 2003 her oldest daughter passed away. Vivian was a member of the Chappell United Methodist Church for over 50 years, receiving her certificate in 2004 and was a member of the Luceba Chapter #220 of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years receiving her pin in 2001. She also had been a member of the Social Hour Extension Club when she was younger. She loved to knit, make hooked rugs, read and do puzzles. Survivors include one daughter, Marcia Groves of Chappell, NE and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother William Clinton Rice, her husband, and one daughter Mary L. Groves | |
| 770 | | W. G. Bailey Found Dead W. G. Bailey Found Dead A young salesman was found dead yesterday in his car at the garage of his Minoa home. The Sheriff's Department said the death was apparent suicide. William G. Bailey, 25, of 300 Hulbert St., was pronounced dead by a physician who was called to the home. The coroner's office said Bailey's wife, Marilyn, found him in the front seat of the car at about 10:45 a.m. The ignition switch was on and the gas tank was empty. Bailey was an automobile salesman. Coroner Harry L. Gilmore withheld a verdict pending further investigation. Services are in charge of the Goddard & Crandall Funeral Home. Mr. Bailey worked for Bender Ford and prior to that was a debit agent for the John Hancock Life Insurance Co. He was a graduate of Eastwood High School. He served with the Navy from 1955 to 1959 and was stationed with the Navy Security Group in Japan. He was a member of Onondaga Lodge 802, F&AM. He attended Eastwood Baptist Church. He was a majority member of DeMolay. Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Elizabeth Ann and Carolyn Ann, and his mother, Mrs. Kenneth F. Cole. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Goddard & Crandall Funeral Home, 3111 James St., the Rev. William Langston and the Rev. Dr. Alfred Boutwell officiating. Final tribute was paid Thursday at Mimico. Interment was at the Glen Dale Memorial Garden Cemetery in Etobicoke. Pallbearers were Norm Trainer and Austin, Sam, Tom, Mervin and Irvin Byers. Born June 25, 1900 at Nipissing Village, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Byers. Mr. Byers married Alma Hughes in 1933 and they later moved to Mimico. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jordan Johnston (Mona) of Grand Prairie and three grandchildren. He will be reunited with his wife Jean of 64 years, who passed away September, 2013. Walter retired from the City of Winnipeg Insect Control Department, where he worked for 30 years. He enjoyed the outdoors with many camping trips to Whiteshell Provincial Park, and spending time tending to his garden and plants around the home. He was born in Winnipeg in April 28, 1930. Mr. Comstock was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Essex, Conn., the son of Walter J. II and Elizabeth I. (Bannister) Comstock. He attended schools in Essex and Deep River, Conn. He owned and operated the Benner & Comstock Hardware Lumber Store and Contracting in Chester until the early 1970s. Following the sale of the business to his partner, he became self-employed as a contractor in the Athens, area, retiring in 1990. He married Doris Heidtmann on June 13, 1953 in East Hadlyme, Conn. She died in 1986. He married Lillian T. Guidi Comstock on Oct. 10, 1986, in Essex, Conn. He was a life member of King Solomon Temple Lodge of Bellows Falls and the Bellows Falls Elks Club. He served in the U.S. Armyduring the Koreanconflict and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as assistant coach for American Legion Post 37 baseball team and helped transport the players to games for many years. He was a former member of the Precision Valley Square Dancers. He was a volunteer fireman, a selectman for many years and a former trustee of the Christian Community Church, all in Athens. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Wendy L. Comstock of Bellows Falls, Doreen C. Hobson of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Jean Crum of Saxtons River; two sons, Jeffrey A. Comstock of Saxtons River and Kirk O. He also coached little league and owned harness race horses over the years but spending time with his grandchildren was most important to him. He was a WW11 veteran having served in the Navy and was employed for 35 years at United Technologies as a Navy Inspector retiring in 1987. He attended flying school and received his private pilots license in 1947. He loved nature and like an artist his property was his canvas. Walter and his wife Jeanne were lifetime members of the East Haddam Land Trust and members of the National Wildlife Federation. He was also an avid fly fisherman. Walter also loved music having played Bluegrass and Country music with his wife Jeanne in the late 1940's and then with his brothers in the 1950's and sixties. Walter was predeceased by his wife Jeanne Arnold Liska, his brother Richard Liska of Virginia City, NV. In March of 1949 he joined the Michigan National Guard and was a member for 10 years. From 1952 to 1992 he worked at the Tecumseh Products and retired with 40 years of service. Walt married Norma Bilby in 1953 and had 5 children. In 2001 he married Jane (Halava) Kiersey. Wanda courageously fought a brief battle with cancer for 8 months. During this time, she maintained hope, always carried a positive attitude and was determined to fight. We continue to thrive on her strength and will continue to carry that throughout our lives. Wanda was born in Newmarket, ON to the parents of Bruce Kitchen and Lula Byers. She was the eldest of four children, siblings Brian, Doug and sister Carol. Wanda grew up in Callander, On and often reminisced about how wonderful her childhood was, the friends she had made and the experiences of growing up, which would often lead to funny stories - which brought out her beautiful, yet infectious laughter and that alone could make a person smile for days. She attended West Ferris public school and definitely made an everlasting impression on everyone she met. As friends remember her for her positive and loving nature, Wanda maintained contact with several classmates over the years and enjoyed getting together to enjoy talks about the good old days, sharing some laughs and enjoying time with her friends. Wanda had a love for traveling. She was always excited about planning her next vacation, or even just taking a simple road trip. Her love for new experiences was amazing. Whether it would be across the world, or across the country - She had an incredible zest for life and all it could offer her. She kept a journal of all of her traveling experiences. Wanda worked in the insurance industry for over 25 years & and had an incredible work ethic. Every co-worker she had, has nothing but beautiful words to say about her. She worked very hard to give the best life she could to her two daughters, Nicole and Melanie. Whether it was words of wisdom or a kick in the pants, she always put her family first. Wanda became a grandmother for the first time in 2003 to a beautiful girl, Abby and again in 2010, welcomed a grandson, Jaysen. Nana became her new name and she was over the moon in love with her grand babies. Wanda was pre deceased by her dear Sister, Carol and sister in law, Joanne. On June 4, 1954, he was united in marriage to his best friend and fishing partner, Joanne M. Tolles in Kalamazoo. In addition to fishing, Wendell enjoyed traveling with Joanne; camping/fishing at Interlochen State Park for over 50 summers and 23 winters in Florida. He was employed by Kalamazoo Public Schools for over 30 years and was a member of Sunnyside United Methodist. Wesley worked for Pratt & Whitney in Production Engineering for 28 years, retiring at an early age to run his farm. Pratt & Whitney sponsored him at UConn for two years. He was schooled in Ellington and Rockville High School Class of 1936. He was a member of the Ellington Congregational Church and the Better Age Club. Wesley and his wife did a lot of traveling in their camper covering the East Coast and Canada. His family is one of the original settlers (Warners) of the Town of Ellington having settled in 1760. The house they lived in was built by one of his ancestors. In addtion to his wife, Stephaine, he leaves two sons and their wives, Robert W. Wilburn was predeceased by his parents Agnes (McConnell) and Levi Byers; his siblings Gladys Mason (the late Tom), Evelyn Byers, Violet Hazelwood (the late Eric), Greta Bayliss (the late Hector), Andrew and Tom Byers (Caroline of Medicine Hat, Alberta). He was the dear brother of Wilda Byers of Dunnville, Sam Byers (Ethel) of Dunnville, Gwen Hazelwood (Clarence) of Renfrew and Marjorie Trainer of North Bay. He is also survived by sons Daniel and Patrick Byers. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. Wilburn was a retired maintenance worker at the former E.T.I. and lived previously in Callander and Powassan. His family will receive visitors at the Paul Funeral Home, Powassan, on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. and on Wednesday, November 9, from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the Paul Funeral Home. | 799 | | Wilfred Byers Wilfred Byers A long time resident of this city, Mr. Wilfred Byers passed away at Leisure World, Saturday, January 14th. He was 84. Mr. Byers was born and resided at Bark Lake (Renfrew County), as well as Nipissing Village and Parry Sound. He moved to North Bay in 1941. A person interested in nature, Mr. Byers was an ardent carver and mounted moose and deer horns as a hobby. He was also an avid hunter. He enjoyed music to the fullest, playing the violin for house parties when living in Nipissing and also as a pastime until sickness intervened. He also repaired violins. Mr. Byers is survived by a son, Emmeth, Mrs. John Collins (Helen), Mrs. Harvey Collins (Ethel) and Mrs. Robert Steed (Bernice), all of North Bay. He will be fondly remembered by fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Gordon of Clearwater, Florida, and a sister, Mary Ellen Lines of Florida. He was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Byers, brothers, Kenneth, William, Lorne and Hubert, and a sister Mrs. George Hignell (Eucaria). Funeral mass was celebrated by Reverend Jack David at St. Peter's Church, Tuesday, January 17th at 11 am. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Walter, Warner and Eric Byers, Robert and Michael Collins, and Carl Glass. | |
