| Loses Luke, His "Seeing Eye", Lonely, Hangs Self With Leash BOSTON (UP)--Luke was his eyes, his confidante, the only real companion he had, and when they took the dog away life held nothing more for blind Raymond Swasey.
That was the reason, friends said today, Swasey hanged himself with Luke's leash from a water pipe in the cellar of his basement apartment in the Back Bay where he was found last night.
Since childhood, Swasey's sight was impaired. Despite his handicap Swasey, 50, was brilliant and ambitious. Six months ago friends arranged for Swasey to go to Morristown, N. J., to train for use of a "seeing eye" dog. The dog was Luke, and in the ensuing months Swasey came to depend on him.
But Luke began to snap at passersby when he walked with his master. A month ago Luke was [sent back to Morristown.
Swasey was left alone in his apartment, unable to leave except on the arm of friends who came too seldom. Finally the loneliness became too great. Then he committed suicide.
