 | Neil Fulton V. Neil Fulton passed away of heart failure on January 4, 2015, in Indian Wells, Calif., Neil was born in Berkeley, Calif, on January 28, 1929. He grew up in Berkeley, attended the local schools and always remained appreciative of the good education his parents provided. His academic success lead to an ROTC Scholarship at the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied accounting and was a member of the Sigma Phi Fraternity. After his graduation from Cal he was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the US Army. He was stationed in Albuquerque, N.M. as part of the secret service involved in atomic testing. Following his honorable discharge from the military he returned to Marin County. In San Francisco, Calif., Neil began his accounting career as a CPA with Gilmore Steel in San Francisco. Gilmore Steel was renamed Oregon Steel and the company relocated to Portland, Ore. in 1975. In Portland, Neil was on the board of the Portland Opera and after retirement continued on the Gilmore Foundation Board of Directors. Neil took over as Chief Executive Officer of Portland Steel and during his tenure there he negotiated a buyout of Kaiser Steel in Fontana, Calif. and then became nationally known for implementing and administrating one of the largest ESOP buyouts in the history of corporate America. This effort provided wealth and retirement benefits to the rank and file, reflecting the generosity that Neil so valued. The company eventually went public and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange, a crowning monument for Neil. From 1975 until 1974, Neil lived in Battleground, Wash. where he raised cattle, had a large orchard, and vegetable garden. Following his retirement from Oregon Steel, he built a beautiful home in Central Oregon and spent several years skiing, golfing, and traveling. In 2004, Neil decided to spend the winter months in Palm Desert, Calif. and in 2006, Neil found love. On July 22, 2006, Janice Fulton and Neil married. They spent time living in Crosswater and Portland, Ore. and then moved to La Quinta, Calif. and then to Indian Wells, where Neil Passed away from heart failure. Their eight glorious years together were filled with love, travel and companionship. As a man, Neil possessed uprightness, decency, and kindness, the true values of life that inspire great love and respect. Neil leaves behind his wife, Janice Fulton; sons Robert and Kevin Fulton; daughter, Debbie Parkinson; Sister, Mary Cuthbertson; grandchildren, Robby Fulton, Mackenzie Shoemaker, Corrin Jensen, Kelsey Fulton. two great-grandchildren, Ava Fulton and Sally Shoemaker; step-children Alex Olmstead, Ann Marie Kolaric, John Dodge, Caroline Kennedy; and their children Emily and Peter Kolaric, Alex and Olivia Kennedy, Peter, Coco, and Georgi. | Nelson McMartin It is with great sadness the family announce his passing at the Mattawa Algonquin Nursing Home on Saturday, June 24th, 2023. Nelson Edward McMartin, was the beloved husband of Anita Elizabeth (née Ritala). He was in his 83rd year. Nelson was the loving father of John McMartin of Pickering, Melissa Paradis and her husband Robert of Ottawa, and Jason McMartin and his wife Tanya of Mattawa. He was the proud and loving grandfather to Jenna, Michelle, Blake, Evan, Elizabeth, Jacob, Naomi, and great grandfather to Alice. Nelson was the dearly loved brother of Claire McMartin and Nancee Adams (Jim). Nelson will also be fondly remembered by the Hazelwood family. Predeceased by his parents, Norman McMartin and Eleanor (née Hazelwood), and his brother Neil McMartin.
Nelson was raised on the McMartin family farm in Papineau-Cameron Township (Mattawa) and was proud to be a third-generation to reside on the farm. Beside farming, he was also an entrepreneur. He operated vehicle sales businesses, and property management for many years. A man of faith, the St. Alban's Anglican Church Community was important to him. Nelson's family was always important; they all have great memories of a well-lived life.
Visitation will be held in the Martyn & Sloan "Mattawa Chapel" on Thursday June 29th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the St. Alban's Anglican Church, on Friday, June 30th at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in the family plot at the Pinehill Cemetery, Mattawa. If desired, donations to the St. Alban The Martyr Anglican Church General Fund, the Algonquin Nursing Home, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
