On February 1, 1953 RCAF Lancaster KB914, which had earlier been on an anti-submarine exercise, headed to Goose Bay, Labrador, to join in the search for a missing civilian aircraft. There were 9 crew members aboard the Lancaster.
Cold weather conditions which included rain that soon became freezing sleet and heavy snow, made the flying difficult. The airplane, approaching Goose Bay for a landing suddenly had only two of its engines working; and to make matters worse the Goose Bay air base had to shut down temporarily because of the poor weather situation, and its Ground Control Approach (GCA) system was not available. So the Lancaster was ordered to divert to Torbay, Newfoundland, instead. With the continuing worsening weather, the loss of the plane's engine power, and a change in flight direction, the radio contact that ground personnel had had with the plane suddenly ended. Lancaster KB914 was declared missing.
The search was hampered by more bad weather and, to make matters more difficult, there were two other missing aircraft that also required attention.
On June 15, 1953 the wreckage of the Lancaster KB914 was spotted from the air. An RCAF ground search party flew out to the wreckage site to recover the human remains and to investigate the scene.
On June 26 funerals were held in Greenwood, Nova Scotia, for the nine airmen-the ceremonies took place in the Catholic Chapel and in the Station Drill Hall. The body of each RCAF airman was then transported to his Canadian hometown for final burial.

Restoule man dies in crash near Hearst
A car accident Saturday afternoon on Hwy. 11-N near Hearst claimed the life of Everett Duane (Don) Grawbarger. He was 41. The accident also took the life of a second unidentified person.
Born April 11, 1932, Everett Grawbarger was the son of Mrs. Everett Grawbarger and the late Mr. Grawbarger. He was born at Restoule and moved to Kapuskasing in 1961. Mr. Grawbarger worked as a forestry foreman with Ontario Hydro. He attended the United Church and was a member of the Kapuskasing Lions Club.
He is survived by two sons, Jerry Kapuskasing and Allan of Powassan; three brothers, Vince of Goulais River, Ivan of Restoule and Lyall of Salmo, B.C.: and two sisters, Mrs. Doug Forster (Olive) of Hamilton and Mrs. Ella Avery of Powassan.
Rev. Robert Jackson will conduct the funeral service Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Restoule United Church with interment at the Restoule Cemetery. Paul Funeral Home of Powassan is in charge of the arrangements.

ILLIG, Rita May - Died suddenly, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, on Saturday, January 12, 2008, in her 86th year, due to complications of a stroke. Beloved mother of Patricia Hammond and her husband Neil of Cambridge, Nancy Gannon and her husband Michael of Ayr. Loving grandmother of Kathy and Steve, Christopher, Courtney and Ian, Stephanie Joe, Andrew and Emma and great grandchild, Jack. Also survived by her brothers and sister, Douglas Holland and his wife Marg of Waterloo, Dorothy Golschesky and her husband Walter of Kitchener, Wayne Holland and his wife Karen of Kitchener. Predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Evelyn Holland; sister, Calvell Ward, sister, Durella; brother, Lloyd and sister-in-law, Edna Holland. Mrs. Illig was born on May 11, 1922 in Kinloss Twsp. Bruce Co. and has been a resident of Cambridge for over 55 years. At the request of Rita, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends at the Barthel Funeral Home 566 Queenston Road, Cambridge on Saturday, January 19, 2008 from 1-2 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Retired man dies in apartment fire

A 63-year-old Kingston man died early yesterday morning of smoke inhalation following a mattress fire in an apartment at 76 Pine St.
Dead is Leland (Earl) Dunleavy.
Firefighters found Dunleavy shortly after 6 am in his bed in the smoke-filled apartment.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the blaze. Smoking in bed is believed to be the cause of the fire.
Kingston Fire Chief Cowdy said that the occupant had not installed a smoke detector in the apartment as required by city bylaw.
“Compliance with the city bylaw is not only sensible but also life-giving” he said. “We get a lot of calls from neighbor who hear smoke alarms providing early notification of the problem”.
A resident of the apartment next to Dunleavy’s said: "I guess I was the first to smell the smoke”.
The woman who asked not to be identified said that she had risen early to go to work and noticed an acrid odor.
When she discovered that the hallway was full of smoke she went upstairs to awaken superintendents Douglas and Valeries Niles.
They called the fire department before using the master key to open the door to Dunleavy’s apartment, Mrs Niles said. However they were unable to enter the apartment because of dense smoke.
Cowdy said that firefighters, wearing breathing equipment, made their way to the back of the apartment to the bedroom, where they discovered the dead man.
"The fire was confined to the bed itself”, he said, adding that there was little fire damage to the building, only some smoke and water damage.
Both the woman in the apartment next to Dunleavy’s and a neighbor ft om across the hall, Helen Bickell, said that they had arrived home at approximately midnight on Saturday night and had not noticed a smell of smoke.
Niles said that she had gotten to know Dunleavy quite well in the three to four years that he had lived in the apartment building. Dunleavy had retired here from British Columbia, said Mrs Niles. Dunleavy is survived by brothers, Patrick, of Kingston and Lawrence and William of Brockville and sisters Helen Sheridan and Margaret Picotte, also of Brockville.
He is also survived by several children, grandchildren, nieces and nephew.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Elwood Ross Of 74 Yeomans Street, Belleville, passed away at Belleville General Hospital on Tuesday, January 2, 1979, in his 81st year, beloved husband of Gladys Ayerst, dear son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Orser, beloved father of of St. Albert, Alberta; Robert of Weston; and Neil of Yellowknife, NWT; Mrs. Helen White of Belleville; Mrs. George Be (Edna) Jacklin, in, Belleville; and Mrs. Charles (Grace) Sharp, Burlington; Jack dear (Edna) brother Spafford of MArg; Kingston; also survived by 13 grandchildren, five niece, (Pat) grandchildren and a Arber of Scarborough. Rev. Orser is resting at the Pinkston and LUScombe Funeral Chapel, Belleville.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Salisbury (Vt.) Congregational Church, for Rhoda Curran Benjamin of Salisbury, the mother of a Madison resident, who died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury, Vt. She was 79.
Born Dec. 1, 1923, the daughter of the late Hazel Bellis Curran and Edward Curran, Mrs. Benjamin lived in Middlebury from 1946 to 1973, when she moved to Salisbury.
Mrs. Benjamin formerly taught in the Addison and Middlebury school systems in Vermont and was the librarian at the Mary Hogan School in Middlebury.
She was a member of the Retired Teachers Organization.
A graduate of Arlington (Vt.) High School and Castleton (Vt.) State College, she received a degree in library science from the University of Vermont, Burlington.
She married James C. Benjamin in 1946 and took up residence in Middlebury that year. The couple moved in 1973 to Salisbury, where they restored an early 1800s home.
Her interests and talents included quilting, in which she was both an award-winner and a judge, and decorative painting and music.
Mrs. Benjamin was an active member of the Salisbury Congregational Church, where she played the piano for both Sunday services and weddings.
She also was a member of the Salisbury Historical Society.
Her husband died in 2002.
