463 Bernice Thornton Banning was born on February 21, 1885, in Providence, Rhode Island, and graduated from Brown University in 1905 and the University of Wisconsin in 1910. In 1916, she set out for the Far East, to travel in Japan, China, and India, and to teach in Ceylon. She was appointed the first principal of the Buddhist Girls School in Ceylon and filled that post for a year, from January to December 1917. The school, founded by Celestina Dias, also known as Mrs. Jeremias Dias, was located in a house called "The Firs" on Turret Road in Colombo. Now called Visakha Vidyalaya, the school has since moved to larger quarters.

After completing her stint at the Buddhist Girls School, Bernice continued in her travels in Ceylon and India. In 1923, she applied for a passport at Madras, India, so that she might stay on there "for the purpose of study and recreation, on behalf of the Theosophical Society." The Theosophical Society, founded in 1875 by Helena Blavatsky and her associates, established its International Headquarters in Madras, a suburb of Adyar, India, sometime before the turn of the century.

I don't know how long Bernice Banning remained in the Orient, but by 1930, she had returned to the United States and was living in Meiners Oaks in the Ojai Valley of Ventura County, California. The head of her household was the elder Margaret Reed, Bernice's companion in her Asian travels. Bernice continued in her work as a teacher. (She had taught at least as far back as 1910 when she was a university instructor.) She also wrote, though perhaps only a little for publication. Her story, "Finger of Kali," was published in the Winter 1931 (or Dec. 1930-Jan. 1931) issue of Oriental Stories. Oriental Stories, then in its second issue, would have been the perfect place for Bernice to display her knowledge of the Far East. The only other credits I have found for her are pieces written for The Adyar Bulletin, a Theosophical publication, and printed in the July 1915 and February 1919 issues. Bernice T. Banning died on September 28, 1954, in Ventura County, California. She was 69 years old.

467 Berton was born in Port Loring on September 20, 1934, the first child of Herbert and Vera (McConnell) Dobbs of Golden Valley. He was the elder brother of Noreen and Judy. Berton grew up on the family farm and attended Golden Valley Public School. His outside interests were sports and music. Being ambidextrous, he could hit the baseball equally well from either side of the plate, and he could switch his hockey stick on the fly carrying the puck and scoring as easily with either hand. He was also a multi-talented musician and could play any instrument he put his hand to guitar, banjo, violin, piano, etc. and played in a band with his father Herb, Stan Moore, Sheila and Noreen Dobbs, then later with Berton Beatty, Judy, Paul and Pauline Dobbs. Berton got his first job working for Odorizzi Lumber Mill.
In his spare time he also earned his Private Pilot License and could land equally well on wheels, skis and floats. Some of his passengers - Les Berger, Ron Culin and Don Odorizzi - went on to earn their licenses. Berton began work at DuPont (now own as Fabrene) in 1960. He met Lucille Landon (Rogerson) and they were married on June 10, 1961 at St. Paul's United Church in Golden Valley. They spent the first seven or eight years of their marriage on the family farm in Golden Valley. Berton became an instant father as Lucille had three children, Stephen, Heather and Jim. He successfully took on the challenge of fatherhood and soon, he and Lucille had their own son, Brad in 1163. Berton was people oriented so he joined the Argyle Lion's Club. He was a very supportive member. Therefore, when the family decided to move to Callander in 1968, he was quick to transfer his membership to the Callander Lions Club. He served as resident several times and was awarded the Helen Keller Fellowship and the Melvin Jones Awards, as well as a life membership in Lions. He was a member of the Callander Volunteer Firefighters and functioned in many roles including Captain. Berton stayed very active in these positions in the community until his retirement after 35 years of service at Fabrene. Berton died peacefully after a long illness on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Lady Isabelle Nursing Home. Trout Creek.

475 Betty Lou Hill (Rogers, Bostwick), 85, passed away June 4, 2014, at the Ochoco Care Center in Prineville, Ore. A private interment will be held at Idlewilde Cemetery in Hood River, Ore.
Betty Lou Bostwick was born May 21, 1929, in Marshall, Mich., to Edythe and Lyle Bostwick. She was the youngest of four children: sister Marie, and brothers Kenneth and George. She spent her teenage years in Hood River, Ore.
When she was in high school she met 23-year-old U.S. Army Air Corps soldier Vernon Rogers, also from Hood River. Vernon was just getting ready to re-enlist in the Air Corps but after meeting Betty, he changed his mind. Betty finished high school early and they married in Hood River.
They were married for 24 years, and had four children: Vernon Jr., Craig, David and Joan.
Early in their marriage they lived and worked in the Hood River, Dee and Odell areas. Later they lived in Portland, and Vernon worked for United Grocers as a warehouseman for over 23 years. Vernon built their first house in Portland himself, constructing the entire plumbing system with salvaged pipe. They used to laugh that there were ?no pieces of water-pipe longer than 3 inches in the entire home? ? there were literally hundreds of pipe couplings holding it together.
They eventually bought an 80-acre farm in Eagle Creek, Ore., and Betty was a full-time mother. She enjoyed gardening, and they raised a variety of animals. In 1971 they divorced, and Betty moved to Boring, Ore.
Betty then held a variety of jobs: bank teller, CNA, secretary, and bookkeeping assistant. She had an entrepreneurial spirit and built an A-frame four-unit motel between Boring and Sandy, Ore., on the newly opened State Highway 26 freeway. Eventually Betty remarried (Ron Hill), and they later divorced.
After a serious hospitalization in 1986, Betty was left disabled and unable to care for herself. Joan brought her from the hospital into their home. She and her family cared personally for Betty from 1986 until 2009, when she moved into Haven House in Fossil, Ore.
In 1998, Joan, her husband Scott, and Betty moved to Spray, Ore. That same year Joan?s father Vernon, who had lived many years on the Oregon coast, also decided to move into their Spray RV park. For years, the residents in Spray were confused ? both Betty and Vernon ?lived with Joan? but not together. Although divorced for many years, they enjoyed an amicable relationship until Vernon?s death in 2004.
As Betty?s health care needs increased, she eventually moved to Ochoco Care Center in Prineville, Ore. She passed away due to complications from a fall she sustained on May 29, which resulted in a broken hip.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Ochoco Care for the extraordinary, patient and loving care they gave Betty while she lived there.
Betty had a strong Christian upbringing as a child, and her faith became her anchor after the 1986 hospitalization. Throughout the intervening years and up until the day she passed, her Bible was never far from her side.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: sister Marie and Ed Coxen, brothers Kenneth and Lee Bostwick, and George and Eileen Bostwick.
She is survived by her children: sons Vernon Jr., Craig and Maria Rogers, David and Desina Rogers, and daughter Joan and Scott Field; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Betty will be held in Spray, Ore., at the Assembly of God Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28. A time for fellowship will follow the service at The Rock. In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made in Betty?s name to Ochoco Care Center, 950 N.E. Elm St., Prineville, OR 97754.
