Dick served his country in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II and again with the U.S. Coast Guard in the North Atlantic during the Korean conflict.
Early on, Dick worked alongside his father at Burt's Printing Service in Dalton, where he also opened a gun shop and operated a mail-order trapping supply business, Alleghany Trappers Supply. Dick married Elnora Ellis in 1952 and in 1961, they moved to Cuba to establish a Western Auto store.
In 1976, he returned to Dalton to operate Burt's Printing Service and then the Minuteman Press in Hornell until his retirement. Dick was an author ("The Farmland Trapper's Handbook") and co-author ("The Trap Collector's Guide" and "Trap Building: Modern and Primitive").
He was an inventor and craftsman (especially known for his turkey calls, sold extensively nationwide) and an avid outdoorsman with a profound understanding of nature. Dick loved good conversation and appreciated keen minds. He was a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation, the National Rifle Association, the Dalton Hunters Club, the Nunda Rotary Club (president, 1987-88), the Nunda Station Masonic Lodge, and served as a trustee of the Village of Cuba.
Dick's wife Elnora predeceased him in 1970. They had five children.
In 1976, he married Lenore Maker, who predeceased him in 1993. His remaining years were spent with his beloved companion, Patricia Wirt of Dalton, who survives.
Dick is also survived by sons, William D. Burt of Geneseo, Steven W. Burt, wife Audrey, and sons Michael, Brian and John of Roanoke, Va., Douglas E. Burt, wife Julie, and daughters Susanne, Sarah and Joanna of Cuba, Thomas A. Burt, wife Dee Dee, and sons Christopher, Matthew and Timothy of Dalton; daughter, Laurie Kastelic, husband Gene, and sons, Daniel, Andrew, and Alexander of Bosque Farms, N.M.; and one great-granddaughter, Kennedy Burt. All will miss him beyond measure.

Almonte, May 19 - The death occurred Wednesday at his home, in Ramsay township of John F. Gordon, in his 85th year. He was a son of J.F. Gordon and Ann Wells, of Glasgow, Scotland, early settlers of Lanark village. In 1885, Mr Gordon married Mrs Margaret Ann Giles, formerly Margaret Ann Evans, of Clayton, Ont., who predeceased him in 1928. To this union, two son and four daughters were born, namely, William, and present living on the homestead; Maggie (Mrs Thos Corrigan), and Minnie (Mrs W.J. Elliott), of Sonneugdale, Sask; Ada (Mrs D. Boyd Traill), of Drummond, and Miss Eva, of Ottawa. Mr Gordon was born in Scotland and was one of a family of 10, of whom two survive, Mrs M. A. McFarlane, Ottawa, and Mrs J.A. Morrison, of Prescott. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 p.m. from the family residence in Ramsay to the Auld Kirk cemetery.

Dawn was born in Kalamazoo on November 24, 1954, the daughter of Duane and Beverly (Kelly) Burnham. She co-owned Acme Bedding with Michael. They were both members of the Corvette Club of Kalamazoo. Her father, Duane, preceded Dawn in death in 1993. Dawn's mother, Beverly Burnham, survives. Surviving both Michael and Dawn are 2 children, Brandie and Jeremy Gouley of Kalamazoo, and James and Shelby Benedict of Delton; 5 grandchildren; brother, Duane (Margie) Burnham of Portage; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Friday from 4-8 p.m. at PARCHMENT-REDMOND Funeral Home 300 East G Avenue 349-7735. Died, at her home in Mentor, Ohio, Sept. 2nd, 1901, Mary C. Wardner, at the advanced age of 73 years. She had been in feeble health for a number of years. Heart trouble caused her death. Mary Gates was born in Webster, N.Y. Oct. 14, 1827, and was married Oct. 19, 1844 to James C. Cook. Unto them six children were born, two of whom survive, L.L. Cook of Mentor, Ohio and Lucy L. Slater of this village. Mr. Cook died during the Civil War.
She was afterward married to Silas Wardner, Sept. 22, 1867, who still survives her.
The funeral was held at the home of her son, L.L. Cook, Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 4, 1901, Rev. Mr. Douglas, officiating. She was laid at rest by the side of her son, Charles, in Mentor.
