3359 Margaret Ann ?Marg? Hall Nee Moore
August 24, 1941 ? July 23, 2021
Marg was born in Pilot Mound, MB and spent her formative years there with sisters Bonnie and Pat. Upon graduation she moved to Winnipeg to attend the University of Manitoba where she graduated with a home economics degree and a proficiency in target shooting. After teaching home economics in Winnipeg her adventurous spirit took her to teach in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.
Marg loved teaching in the North! After Inuvik, she taught in Fort Smith where she met her future husband, Rus Hall. He was smitten when taking her out to teach her how to shoot he discovered she was a crack shot.
Marg and Rus were married in Fort Smith in 1968 and moved to Yellowknife later that year. Marg taught foods and sewing at Sir John Franklin High School.
A move took them to Drayton Valley where Marg continued her teaching career but the lure of the north brought them back to Yellowknife. A change of careers had her working as a travel agent for Mack Travel and it wasn?t long before she was the manager. Living in the North allowed them both time to partake in the northern activities of camping, canoeing, flying, curling, cross country skiing, fishing and snowmobiling. They enjoyed these pursuits with friends. In true northern fashion they formed lifelong friendships.
But Marg knew she wanted more. She was a businesswoman. She convinced her sister Pat and a former employee of the travel agency to start an office service business, Office Compliments, that is still operating in Yellowknife today. Although this was another new career for her. Marg still brought her teaching skills into the business. She even ensured that her baking skills not be forgotten as she insisted on having home baked goodies for their clients. Pat and the other partner cringed when it was their turn to bake.
Another change was in the cards, and they moved south to see where the adventures might take them. Still being young, Marg and Rus decided to start flipping houses in Cranbrook, BC. They were ahead of their time as there was not even one TV show on the subject. Marg was the decorator and Rus the heavy lifter. Marg volunteered at the Hospital Auxiliary thrift shop. After 10 years in BC, they then settled in High River Alberta.
In High River Marg continued with her volunteer activities first making quilts for the Hospital Auxiliary to sell in their gift shop and then becoming the president of the Auxiliary. Marg was also involved in a local quilt guild, Victoria Quilts making quilts for cancer patients, writing quilting patterns and other activities in town.
Marg and Rus took this time to see the world from Africa to the Antarctic. Finally settling on wintering in Arizona. Marg loved her trips with her sisters to London, Las Vegas and wherever there was a curling match. Going to live theatre was also a pleasure Marg enjoyed. She was able to travel with friends and family to take part in this passion. Her favorite show of all time was Cats, but she enjoyed all of Andrew Lloyd Webber?s shows.
Home was Marg?s heart! She enjoyed sewing, baking and hosting you in her house. Marg published a cookbook with many of her favorite recipes.
Pilot Mound always was home away from home to Marg. Through the years many quilts were sent back to help fund such things as the Millennium Complex. After Rus?s death Marg moved back to be closer to family. Marg really enjoyed living in Pilot Mound and getting to know the surrounding countryside again.
Marg was always a teacher and in the business and quilting world a mentor to many. She was kind and always had time for people. It was always important to Marg that she listen to you. She had wisdom but only shared it when needed or asked. We will miss, Doris Domestic, a nickname she was sometimes called, her home-made goodies, her special smile and her love.
Marg died after a short battle with cancer.
Marg is really missed by her family, sister Bonnie Sutherland; sons Pat (Shelley, Hayley and Kaitlyn), Kirk (Sonya, Quinton and Ethan); sister Pat Moore (Garth) stepchildren Erika (Charlie, Noah, Sophie and Felix) and Ross (Roxane)and many friends.
Celebration of life will be held on July 31, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at the Anglican Church in Pilot Mound. Lunch to follow.

3367 Margaret Wood met James Allen at the Avenue Road Church in Toronto where Charles Templeton was pastor. Circumstances led to her becoming pregnant and with the help of the pastor her father was able to put an end to the relationship. At the time Margaret may have known or not have known that James was married. She told the family years later that he had a wife named Lillian and 2 children and a brother named Joe. She didn't know when he was born or his exact age. An inquiry to the York Children's Aid Society stated that he was approximately 40 years old at the time of Alfred's adoption in 1956. Margaret was born in 1926 so James was 18 years older. Children's Aid indicated James had paid support and had visitation rights up until the adoption.
Alfred was born in March 1948 so his parents met in 1947. Alf's mother's maiden name was Wood and that was the name Alf was given at birth. His mother married Douglas Reginald Mann and then an adoption was done in 1956 that changed Alf's surname from Wood to Mann. Douglas Mann died in 1959. Margaret met Jimmy Allen at the Avenue Road Church in Toronto during the time period that Charles Templeton had a thriving congregation. Margaret named her son Alfred Charles, the Charles being for Charles Templeton.

3393 Mark Bassett, author of books on American art pottery, lost his husband George Cooper on January 31, 2020, to an apparent heart attack, while asleep. Cecil George Cooper (1948-2020) was the oldest son of Cecil Floyd Cooper and Rosella Suhler Cooper of Springfield, Colorado, who both predeceased him. Three siblings also survive: Randy Cooper of Manzanola, Colorado; Kathleen Cooper (David) Frank of Springfield; and Marie Cooper (Brad) Emmons of Portland, Oregon. He is also survived by two children, and numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
George lived a life filled with music. Starting in eighth grade, he played the organ during services in the family church. In high school he repaired numerous player pianos, with project pianos spilling out from his parents? garage onto the front lawn. He studied music education and organ performance at the University of Colorado, and was then drafted into the US Army, serving from 1970 to 1973. (He was a medic in Korea during the Vietnam War). After his military service, in Wichita, KS George again became an entrepreneur, making tracker bars and roll frames for player pianos under the business name Mechanical Music.
In 1984 George partnered with Mark Travis Bassett (b. 1953) and was an important ?sounding board? for Mark, giving him feedback on every writing project for the next 35 years, starting with Mark?s Ph.D. dissertation (1985) for the University of Missouri. The two had met when George taught Mark country and ballroom dancing, a hobby they both enjoyed for many years. For twelve years, in first Wichita and later Des Moines, George also served as church organist at the local Metropolitan Community Church, an inter-denominational Christian faith.
Between 1987 and 1990, the couple lived in Nevada, Iowa, after Mark was hired to teach at nearby Iowa State University. Because of George?s willingness to move to Iowa, Mark in 1990 temporarily gave up his teaching career. However, while working as a full-time antique dealer, starting in 1991, Mark began conducting research and photographing collections for a book, written with Victoria Naumann Smoot, called Cowan Pottery and the Cleveland School. Its 1997 publication coincided with the couple?s next move? to Lakewood, OH. In Cleveland, Mark and George became active members of the Cleveland City Country Dancers, which was an LGBT square dancing group. Mark?s books on Roseville Pottery followed soon after they settled in Lakewood.
For the next 22 years, George worked as a pipe organ technician for Holtkamp Organ Company, and he was also one of the company?s three main ?voicers,? meaning he repaired, built, or rebuilt pipe organs and then tuned the pipes individually to have a proper sound or voice. His work travel took him to many large church and collegiate pipe organs across the US; this could position him on a job site from several weeks to several months. Among George?s most memorable projects for Holtkamp were the pipe organ of the Cathedral of St. Louis, King of France (New Orleans), damaged by Hurricane Katrina; and (his personal favorite) restoring a rare Aeolian player organ for The Historic New Orleans Collection. He also worked on the pipe organs at the Juillard School, St. Olaf College, Utah State University, Park Avenue Christian Church (NYC), the Peabody Institute, and many other prominent venues.
In 2005 Mark returned to full-time teaching, first in the undergraduate writing program of Case Western Reserve University. In 2010 he moved to the Cleveland Institute of Art, to teach American Crafts History in addition to several writing courses. In the spring of 2019 Mark retired from full-time teaching, but he continues to serve on the adjunct CIA faculty.
At a time when same-sex marriages were available in only a few American states, George and Mark eloped to Niagara Falls, NY, where they were married on December 26, 2013. Because it was Boxing Day in Canada, two square dancing friends from Toronto were able to drive down to serve as witnesses and to celebrate the occasion. George retired from his full-time position at Holtkamp in 2019, and during his retirement was planning to build several band organs of his own design. Mark will remain in the 1917 home the couple shared together for more than 20 years.
In September, George?s ashes will be interred with military honors at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. A range of friends and family are expected to attend a memorial celebration of George?s life, scheduled now to take place in Lakewood on Saturday, September 26, 2020.
