O'NEIL, Reverend Allan House The Reverend Allan House O'Neil, Rector Emeritus of St. John's Episcopal Church in West Hartford, a priest who wanted to be remembered as one who "did what he could" entered into his eternal life on Thursday (December 7, 2006) at the Hughes Home in West Hartford. He was 81. Born in Barre, VT, son of the late Mildred House and Brooks Emerson O'Neil. He is survived by his wife, of 55 years, Ruth Kayser O'Neil, and their two sons, Allan House O'Neil, II of Los Angeles, CA and Brooks Gregory O'Neil and his wife, Patricia, of Edina, Minnesota. Also surviving are three nephews, Roderick, Peter, and Gregory; a niece, Cynthia, Thomas K. Sager; and eight grandchildren, Taylor, Charles, Kaitlin, Patrick, Chelsea, Tucker, Meghan, and Michael. He was predeceased by his brother, Howard B. O'Neil and his wife, Elaine. Mr. O'Neil was Rector of St. John's from 1975 until 1990. This was a transition time for the national church and Mr. O'Neil cultivated a friendlier and more welcoming parish at St. John's during his tenure. He oversaw the initiation of the Episcopal Church's new prayer book in 1979 and facilitated much broader inclusion of lay members, including women, in the administration of the parish and worship services. In 1980 he went on sabbatical to Auckland, New Zealand to work with The Reverend Peter Beck in his inner city ministry. He also led a major capital and renovation project for the church's physical structure in the early 1980s. While Mr. O'Neil enjoyed 15 wonderful years at St. John's, many of the highpoints of his life occurred while he was rector at St. Andrews, Meriden, where he served from 1960-1975. During those years he was at the forefront of the ecumenical movement, worked tirelessly for the cause of the poor and the homeless, and brought his ministry to the broader community as well as his parish. Originally from Montpelier, VT, Mr. O'Neil attended the University of New Hampshire. His studies were interrupted by service overseas in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to UNH where he was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. Following graduation, Mr. O'Neil accepted a job working in computers for Raytheon in Cambridge, MA. While in Cambridge, he met and married the former Ruth Kayser, who was working for American Airlines at the time. Rather than computers, at Raytheon Mr. O'Neil found himself involved in the problems of people with whom he was working. He wanted to help people relate well with each other. Recognizing he needed a framework and some training to adequately address people's needs, he left Raytheon and began studying for the ministry at The Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, MA. Upon becoming ordained, Mr. O'Neil served as a curate in Springfield, OH and as rector of St. James church in Piqua, OH. The O'Neil's were called to Meriden in 1960. In Meriden, a town dominated by Roman Catholics, Mr. O'Neil established an ecumenical council to further the cause of understanding between churches. In May 1964, O'Neil opened the doors of St. Andrews to Richard Cardinal Cushing, the Roman Catholic leader of the Boston Archdiocese. This was the first time a Roman Catholic prelate left his prelature and preached in a Protestant parish. Due to the message of his ministry, the O'Neils traveled around the world on sabbatical. In 1973, while in Rome, the couple had an audience with Pope Paul VI, where they presented the pontiff with a silver chalice, made by the International Silver Company of Meriden, engraved with the words, "that we all may be one." They also went to Istanbul where they met the Patriarch of Constantinople. Beyond the cause of ecumenism, Mr. O'Neil was supportive of the needs of the poor and disadvantaged. On August 28, 1963 he and a small group of other clergy from Meriden attended the Jobs and Freedom march in Washington D.C. during which Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream," speech. In 1968 he also became the legal guardian for Thomas K. Sager, a member of the parish who had lost both of his parents to illness. In addition to his duties at the church, Mr. O'Neil was a vital member of the Greater Meriden community and served as Chairman of the School Board, Chaplain to the local police department and the Connecticut State Police, and was a director of Meriden Hospital. He also served as Chaplain to the Curtis Home, which provided services to homeless children and elderly persons. Mr. O'Neil was an accomplished preacher, celebrated mass with great feeling and loved classical church music. While in Meriden, he convinced Ralph Valentine, instructor of music at Choate Rosemary Hall, to become organist and choirmaster at St. Andrews. The two formed a marvelous partnership that continued during O'Neil's entire tenure in West Hartford. Sunday services consisted of compelling preaching and glorious selections from the world's greatest composers. Married for 55 years, Allan and Ruth also formed a wonderful duo and together served the needs of the parish, the community, their friends and their family. Mr. O'Neil's ashes will be interred in the Cloister garden at St. John's, a tradition he started during his tenure as rector there. A memorial service will be held on December 16th at 11:30 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 679 Farmington Ave. West Hartford. Presiding will be the Right Reverend Clarence Coleridge, retired Bishop of Connecticut, The Right Reverend Kirk Smith, Bishop of Arizona, and the Reverend Joseph Pace, Rector of St. John's. | O'Neil, Allan House (I05130)

OBITUARY. - The Reverend David Hazlewood, Wesleyan Minister, died at Maitland, on the 30th October, aged 36, after a lingering illness of a pulmonary character. The deceased was born at Fakenham, in Norfolk, England January 8th, 1820. His father was a gentleman's bailiff. At a very early age the deceased was employed as a shepherd. His mother kept a village school, which afforded young David almost the only means of instruction he ever had.
At the age of fourteen he joined the Methodist Society, and remained a constant member of it until the end of his life. The Methodists are peculiarly distinguished amongst religious bodies by the care they manifest in placing all their available talent in a situation where it may operate to advantage. They accordingly soon perceived that David Hazlewood had talents of a peculiar order, and which qualified him to perform certain duties necessary to the success of missionary enterprise.
About fourteen years ago he arrived in this colony, and became a local preacher among the Methodists. He had previously acquired a knowledge of Latin, Greek, and French, which of course paved the way for the acquirement of other languages. He was finally called to the ministry and sent as a missionary to the Feejee Islands. His province in the missionary field was that of a translator. He studied the Hebrew in Feejee in order that he might comply with the requirements of the Bible Society, and then translated the whole of the Old Testament into Feejeean, and also revised the translation of the New ; he also compiled a Grammar and Dictionary of the Feejeean language. He was engaged for many months past whilst residing in this town, in revising his translation of the Old Testament and had death terminated his valuable life. We cannot allow a great man like this?albeit his virtues were of the quiet order?to pass away from us without passing notice imbued with sorrowful regret. He has accomplished a great work, and future generations of men in the islands of the Pacific will regard him with a veneration.
We understand that the deceased in addition to the languages already mentioned was acquainted with the Tongese and the Maori and that from the shortness of his life and the unremunerative character of the work to which he was devoted, has left but a scanty provision for his family. Should this be the the case it is the duty of the Christian public to see that of the descendants of Mr Hazlewood do not experience want.--Hunter River Journal. NEW SOUTH WALES. (1855, November 30). Old Lyme - On Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016, James Brewster Noyes, a vibrant member of our country's "Greatest Generation", traded-in his baseball cap for a halo.
James was born Oct. 28, 1922, in the family homestead on McCurdy Road in Old Lyme. He lived in the Lymes all his life. James was the youngest of seven children, the son of Charles Reginald Noyes and Lucy (Bancroft) Noyes.
James is survived by his partner, Doris Hungerford; his son, Walter of Naples, Fla.; his son Jack's partner, Charlene Maddox of Old Lyme; his son, Bruce and his wife, Tammy, of Old Lyme; his granddaughter, Jhrusha Greenberg and her husband, Philip, and their daughter, Madeline of Boulder, Colo.; and his grandson, Graham Noyes of Denver, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Florence Tostevin; and their son, John "Jack" Noyes.
James graduated from the Old Lyme High School in 1942 and immediately entered the Navy for service in the Mediterranean Theatre, on LST #197, transporting personnel and equipment. He took part in five invasions in Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, and southern France. He was awarded the Navy Unit Citation Commendation in southern France.
After World War II, James was in the Naval Reserves, SeaBees Division until 1967. His construction battalion completed many public relations projects, including building Little League fields (one in Old Lyme) and a Boy Scout camp. They also repaired camps throughout the state.
James met his wife Helen on V-J Day, in Newport News, Va. Helen was with the Women's Auxiliary Volunteer Service (WAVES), which was attached to the Navy. James and Helen were married in her hometown of Mandan, N.D. on March 12, 1946. Then, they settled in Old Lyme and started a family.
After World War II, James continued to heed the SeaBees' call to service back home, serving as a town constable, on the board of directors of the Little League, on the Boy Scout committee, as a member of the Republican Town Committee, on the board of directors of the Southeastern CT Builders Association, on the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce, and on the board of directors of the Florence Griswold Museum.
James was proud to state that he'd voted in every election since he was 21 years of age. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #41 and a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #1467, assisting with many of its blood drives and civic projects.
James was passionate about baseball. His favorite professional team was the NY Yankees, but he most loved attending local games and could be seen on the sidelines of the sports fields, and in the gym for basketball games, as recently as this past winter. James proudly cheered on his sons, grandchildren and nephews at hundreds of competitions. But, when family members graduated, he continued to attend games to cheer on Lyme-Old Lyme teams just because our students were part of his community.
As founder of James B. Noyes & Sons, he was well-known as a builder in the area, constructing many homes. Projects included restoring the Old Saybrook Railroad Station, remodeling the New London Soup Kitchen, building an office for the Literacy Volunteers in the Westbrook Library, repairing the steeple of the Old Lyme Congregational Church, and restoring the plaques for veterans in the Old Lyme Town Hall. He contributed in numerous ways to the construction of the Lymes Senior Center, serving on the site selection, building and maintenance committees.
James volunteered for seven years with Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut, building 15 homes for families who otherwise could not afford them.
James was proud to be a descendant of the founding minister of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, the Reverend Moses Noyes (1643-1729). James served as chairman of the church's property committee, and was honored as deacon emeritus. He volunteered for many years at the Church's White Elephant (rummage) Sale, and was proud to have wrangled many Noyes family members to work at the sale alongside him. He presided over the small furniture department with his son Bruce just last month.
For the last 15 years, James was blessed to have Doris Bell Hungerford at his side. They'd been friends for many years as their children grew up together in the Lymes. Doris and James were able to travel, take part in senior center activities and serve with local organizations for most of their time together, and they enjoyed the benefits of blending their families.
For all he'd accomplished for others, James was honored by his home town of Old Lyme, and named 2002 Citizen Of The Year.
James noted that he was a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) due to the fact that his grandfather, Captain Enoch Noyes, served with the Union Army during the Civil War.
Proud of his family's civic and religious contributions through the generations, and eager to preserve the histories of all of its families, James served as a trustee for the Old Lyme Historical Society and donated items to the Society's collection for all to enjoy.
James was proud also of his family's contributions to the field of nursing. He had fond memories of his aunt, Clara Dutton Noyes, who served as the director of the Red Cross Bureau of Nursing during World War I, where she was responsible for more than 21,000 nurses. In addition, James's sister Mary was the town nurse for Old Lyme and as she was beloved, a scholarship was instituted in her honor.
Consequently, it was James's wish that in lieu of flowers, people would contribute to the Mary Hubbard Noyes Scholarship Award, P.O. Box 56, Old Lyme, CT 06371.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, in First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, 1 McCurdy Road, Old Lyme.

Old Lyme - On Wednesday, May 4, 2016, Carol Banning (Noyes) Winters, passed away peacefully at home; the place where she was raised and she raised her family. She was surrounded by her three children: Scott, Christopher and Michelle.
Carol was born Sept. 5, 1946 and was a proud graduate of Lyme-Old Lyme High School, Class of 1964.
She was predeceased by her husband, Allen "Popi"; her brother, Wilson Noyes; and her parents, William and Winifred Noyes.
Of all the things she loved, her family was the most important. She is survived by Scott and his wife, Karen, and their two children, Jeffrey and Brian; Christopher and his daughter, Evelyn; and Michelle and her husband, Michael, and their three children, Brittney, Megan and Jon. Her granddogs, Jacob and Lucy, were a source of much enjoyment to her and the grateful recipients of her leftovers.
She had a strong group of her closest friends that spent every New Years Eve together. We hope that they will tell great stories about her when they ring in the next New Year and remember how much she loved you all. To her friends at the Flanders Baptist and Community Church, we are forever in awe at your sense of timing when you called her house to sing Amazing Grace to her, not knowing that she had just taken her last breath.
Always up for an estate sale, Carol spent many Saturday mornings with her antiquing buddies, but she was the happiest picking wild blueberries in the woods of Whippoorwill to make her famous Bishops Bread. The recipe will never be quite the same without the addition her love for us all.
Carol was a generous volunteer with the Visiting Nurses Association, The Old Lyme Historic District Commission, the Mary Noyes Award and The Old Lyme Historical Society. Her bookkeeping skills kept her mind sharp and her pencil even sharper as she prepared tax returns and balanced the checkbooks of many.
The family would also like to thank the nurses and doctors at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and Bridebrook Health and Rehabilitation Center as well as Center for Hospice Care for their kindness and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Old Lyme Historic Society Scholarship, P.O. Box 352, Old Lyme, CT 06371 or the Mary Hubbard Noyes Scholarship Award, P.O. Box 56, Old Lyme, CT 06371.
We love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.
