  • Notes
    • Married to this woman at the same time as to Annie Knight.
      Annulled due to bigamy.

Tom Haley Sr., says that there is a story that William Knight sold my grandmother, Annie, to Mr. Bertram. Grandma Annie was pregnant at the time and needed a husband. At the time no one knew the Mr. Bertram was already married to someone else. Mr. Bertram had a child with Grandma Annie before anyone realized that he had another wife. Grandpa William and his wife, Mariah, then took Grandma Annie's children (John and Louise) away from her and they raised them instead. My Dad didn't get to know Uncle John until after WWII.

Uncle George disagrees. He heard that Mr. Bertram was a travelling salesman from Belleville and just that him and Grandma Haley hit it off. But, he was married to another woman in Belleville.
