    • PRESTON, Gary Bell - passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, February 8, 2014. Gary was in his 73rd year and had fought a courageous three year battle with cancer. Gary married Gladys Edna Welch in October of 1963 and they recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary surrounded by family and friends. Gary is the cherished father of Dianna Scates (Neil) and Kara Weir (Ryan). Treasured Grandpa of Cayley and Kevin Scates and Aidan and Brendan Quinn. Gary will be sadly missed by his big sister, Mary Male (Grant) of Hamilton and his brothers Jack (Geraldine) of Brockville and Andy (Shirleen) of Smiths Falls. He was the beloved "Uncle B" to many nieces and nephews. Gary spent his career working for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services at Brockville Jail, Perth Jail, Quinte Detention Centre, Peterborough Jail, Millbrook Correction Centre, and Rideau Correctional Centre. Gary was also an active member of the Lions Club in many of the communities in which he lived. After retiring at the age of 52, he focused on his family, and being an amazing grandfather to his four grandchildren. "Poppa" rarely missed a dance recital or competition, a music performance, a hockey or soccer game. Gary's passion during his retirement years was snowmobiling in the winter and enjoying time in Florida during the spring and fall. A true family man, there were many entire family cruises and vacations full of laughter and amazing memories. Friends are invited to call at the MACKEY FUNERAL HOME, 33 Peel Street, Lindsay (705.328.2721) on Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, February 11, from 12:00 p.m. until time of Funeral Service in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Riverside Cemetery, Lindsay. Memorial donations to Ross Memorial Hospital - Palliative Care Unit or Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes - Susan DeNure Sports Fund would be appreciated by the family.
