      A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. April 5 at Rest-Haven Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Eugene for Russell Eugene Phillips of Eugene, who died March 11 of age-related causes. He was 89.
      Phillips was born May 20, 1920, in Great Falls, Mont., to Ross and Connie Foster Phillips. He married Jane Palmquist on Jan. 2, 1973, in Seattle. She died Sept. 23, 2002.
      He served as a gunner in the Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington, which was sunk by Japanese aircraft during the Battle of the Coral Sea. He also served on the USS Jacinto. He worked as a truck driver.
      Survivors include a son, Russell "Skeet" of Springfield; a stepdaughter, Pam Hobday of Truckee, Calif.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
