- Alma W. McConnell
Powassan: The funeral for Mrs. Alma Wilaven McConnell (nee Brown) was conducted by Rev. Judith Hare in the Paul Funeral Home, Powassan, on Monday, October 2, 1989. Mrs. Shirley Moore sang "Amazing Grace" accompanied on the organ by her son Andrew Scinto.
Casket bearers were Charlie McConnell, Ivan Brown, Rick Blackall, Bill Cole, Robert Brown and Joey Astgen. The Honour Guard was formed by friends from the Silver Crescent Women's Institute of which Alma was a member.
Interment took place in the Powassan Union Cemetery.
Alma McConnell died Friday, September 29, in the Sudbury Laurentian Hospital in her 70th year.
She was the beloved wife of the late Harvey James McConnell; a loving mother of Gordon and his wife Judy, Sudbury; Kenneth and his wife Rudith, Thamesford; dear sister of Eddie Brown and his wife Dolly, Powassan, Margaret and her husband Doug Hubacheck, South River, Oliver Brown and his wife Jessie, Norwood; dear step-sister of Jerry Brown, South River, Kathy Brown, North Bay and Keith Brown, Rutherglen. Remembered by seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many neices and nephews.
Alma Brown was born in Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island to William and Florence Brown, and in 1929 moved to Powassan. She met and married Harvey McConnell in 1937. In 1978 Harvey died and Alma continued to live in the Powassan area until May of this year, when she moved to Westmount Retirement Home in Sudbury. There, although she had been ill for many years, Alma lived a life of dignity in a comfortable, friendly environment.
She will be remembered for her joy of crafts, including knitting, crocheting, sewing, ceramics and flowers. Alma loved her children and grandchildren very much and was always, despite failing health, able to help those in need.
