Notes |
- Berton was born in Port Loring on September 20, 1934, the first child of Herbert and Vera (McConnell) Dobbs of Golden Valley. He was the elder brother of Noreen and Judy. Berton grew up on the family farm and attended Golden Valley Public School. His outside interests were sports and music. Being ambidextrous, he could hit the baseball equally well from either side of the plate, and he could switch his hockey stick on the fly carrying the puck and scoring as easily with either hand. He was also a multi-talented musician and could play any instrument he put his hand to guitar, banjo, violin, piano, etc. and played in a band with his father Herb, Stan Moore, Sheila and Noreen Dobbs, then later with Berton Beatty, Judy, Paul and Pauline Dobbs. Berton got his first job working for Odorizzi Lumber Mill.
In his spare time he also earned his Private Pilot License and could land equally well on wheels, skis and floats. Some of his passengers - Les Berger, Ron Culin and Don Odorizzi - went on to earn their licenses. Berton began work at DuPont (now own as Fabrene) in 1960. He met Lucille Landon (Rogerson) and they were married on June 10, 1961 at St. Paul's United Church in Golden Valley. They spent the first seven or eight years of their marriage on the family farm in Golden Valley. Berton became an instant father as Lucille had three children, Stephen, Heather and Jim. He successfully took on the challenge of fatherhood and soon, he and Lucille had their own son, Brad in 1163. Berton was people oriented so he joined the Argyle Lion's Club. He was a very supportive member. Therefore, when the family decided to move to Callander in 1968, he was quick to transfer his membership to the Callander Lions Club. He served as resident several times and was awarded the Helen Keller Fellowship and the Melvin Jones Awards, as well as a life membership in Lions. He was a member of the Callander Volunteer Firefighters and functioned in many roles including Captain. Berton stayed very active in these positions in the community until his retirement after 35 years of service at Fabrene. Berton died peacefully after a long illness on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Lady Isabelle Nursing Home. Trout Creek.
