- Marvin Mathews, 98, of Arlington, formerly of Dilley, a man of God, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 20, 2010.
Marvin's parents, Joseph & Florence Mathews moved to the Millett area around 1905. He was born on March 27, 1912, about 4 miles east of Millett. There were 5 children of which Marvin was the 4th born. He attended school in Millett, Dilley & Cotulla, where he graduated in 1931. Marvin played football on the first team Dilley had. He attended West Mooreland Jr. College in San Antonio and on to Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos where he played football. He wanted to be a coach, but money was scarce because of the Great Depression. He went to California and worked a few years. He then went to the state of Washington & worked on the Grand Coulee Dam. In 1936, he returned to Millett & began farming & ranching. In 1938, he met Ruby Banning & they were married in September 1939. They have 5 children, 15 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren & 5 great, great grandchildren.
In 1950, during a great drought, he went to work for Hughes Butane Co. in Cotulla. A few years later, the company was purchased by Universal Gas Co. He retired after 27 years.
Marvin was very talented musically. He played the saxophone in the church orchestra and sang solos. He was a charter member of Christian Faith Center, formerly 1st Assembly of God Church in Dilley. He was a Deacon for 60 years.
He leaves a legacy of faith, honor, service & love for family, friends, country & most importantly, love for his Heavenly Father. He was a lifelong resident of Dilley & Millett.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby of 70 years, two daughters & three sons. Patricia McCarthy & husband, Stanley of Mansfield, TX, Linda Showalter & husband John of Arlington, TX, Joe Mathews & wife Patsy of Dilley, Jerry Mathews & wife Sharla of The Woodlands, TX and Jimmy Mathews & wife Gigi of Corpus Christi, TX.
