- Longtime Oklahoma resident Dora Mae Tacker Mitchell turned 90 years old on Dec. 24, 2015.
Longtime Oklahoma resident Dora Mae Tacker Mitchell turned 90 years old on Dec. 24, 2015.
Mae was born in Norman in Cleveland County in 1924 and was the youngest child with three brothers. Her family moved to California when Mae was 1 year old. When her grandmother passed away, Mae?s family inherited the family farm in Norman at the age of 8 and she became an Okie again.
In 1942, Mae graduated from Macomb High School and continued her education, earning a bachelor?s degree at Central State Teacher?s College (now Central State University in Edmond).
Mae married Carter Tacker Jr. in 1946 and moved to Pueblo, Colorado. They both were educators in public schools there. While in Colorado they adopted their first child, Tamara Kay in 1954. Oklahoma called them again, so Mae and her husband, Carter, moved back to Oklahoma. A new addition to the family came in 1954 when Mae and Carter adopted their second child, Jimmie. Mae has devoted her life to education. She has taught all grades from kindergarten through high school. For 12 years, Mae taught classes and served as principal at Faith Seven School in Shawnee. Mae is also an accomplished pianist and seamstress.
In 1998, after her husband?s death, Mae married Dr. Bill Mitchell. They now reside in Shawnee.
Mae said she has lived a full life. Her motto, ?In all things, let God direct your life.?
