Notes |
- Passed away June 3rd in Holland. Born April 14th, 1925, in Battle Creek to Herold and Crystal Wellever, he was the eldest of three siblings with sisters, Ruth and Reed Nelson of Battle Creek, and Jean Blanck of Reed City. Bob graduated from Battle Creek Central in 1943, and immediately joined the Army Air Corps where he became a pilot of P-51 Mustang fighter planes. He was married to his wife of 65 years, Barbara (Brattain), February 23rd, 1945 while still in the service. Upon discharge from the Air Corp as a First Lieutenant, Bob attended Western Michigan College of Education (WMU) where he earned a Bachelors of Science degree in February, of 1950. He graduated on Sunday and started work Monday at Fenton High School, where he taught Physics and Chemistry for 35 .5 years. He received his Masters of Physics and Chemistry from the University of Detroit and many honors and awards during his career. During summer breaks, Bob ran a painting business, maintaining homes businesses and schools around Fenton. He was particularly known for painting the adjacent steeples of the Episcopal and Presbyterian Churches, often while the pastor prayed below.
Bob enjoyed outdoor pursuits, camping, fishing, canoeing and hiking along with photography and chess. An avid skier into his mid-seventies, he made many trips to Colorado, Canada and northern Michigan. After retiring in 1985, Bob and Barb traveled to Ecuador to visit the family of their 1967 exchange student son, Max Samaniego. They also traveled through Europe and visited their 1978 exchange student son Nick Hayoz, in Switzerland. They moved to Allegan in the fall of 1985 and built a home near their son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Kathi. They became active in Christ Community Church and Bob volunteered many hours, building the new church. His love of trout fishing led him to become involved with the Kalamazoo Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He participated in many outings and projects, and donated guided trips to his favorite stream, the Yellowdog. Along with his diverse knowledge, he was known for his subtle humor and quick wit. Bob is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Carolyn and Thomas Kelley of Fenton; sons, Bill and Susan Wellever of CA and Jim and Kathryn Wellever of Allegan; grandsons, Thomas, Timothy and Troy Kelley, Patrick, Jacob and Emery Wellever; great grandsons, Tyler and Tanner Kelley; also his 2 sisters, and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
