- Mary Ellen Freeman Mayfield, 85, died on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, in a local hospital.
She was born in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 1, 1917, to Mabel Rebecca Beidler and James Freeman.
She was raised in Chattanooga and graduated from GPS. She attended Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans and graduated from Wellesley College in Boston in 1938.
She taught English at the University of Chattanooga before her marriage in 1939 to Charles Stanwix (Stax) Mayfield Jr., who died in 1992. She was married to him for 53 years.
She is survived by three daughters: Maryl Elliott and husband John, Betsy McEntyre and husband John, and Katie Torrence and husband James, all of Cleveland; and one son, Charles S. Mayfield III, of Nashville.
She has six grandchildren: Jay Elliott and wife Missy of Chattanooga, David Elliott and wife Kelley of Chattanooga, Michael Elliott of Monteagle, Dawn McEntyre of New York City, Charles Mayfield McEntyre of Reliance, and Dr. Madison Torrence and wife Vanessa of Ooltewah.
Mrs. Mayfield is also survived by two great-grandchildren: Jack Elliott, of Chattanooga and Rebecca Torrence, of Ooltewah.
She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church where the service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 4 p.m. in the main sanctuary with the Revs. Andy Ferguson and Debbie Stokes officiating. Pallbearers will be Mrs. Mayfield's five, grandsons.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the library at North Lee Elementary Sehool, 205 Sequoia Road, N.W., Cleveland, TN 37312 or to the Cleveland Public Library, 795 Church St. N.W., Cleveland, TN 37311 or to Broad St. UMC, P.O. Box 3, Cleveland, TN 37364-0003.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Hardwick Parlor of Broad Street United Metbodist Church prior to the service.
Grissom Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
