- Dr. Robert I. Ayerst , a retired gynecologist and obstetrician, died Friday of kidney failure at his home. He was 71.
Dr. Ayerst was born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., and lived in New Orleans the past 40 years.
He was a graduate of the Japanese Language School at Yale University, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Trinity College of Duke University and Duke University School of Medicine.
He began his career as an intern at Duke Hospital and was a research assistant at Cornell Medical School in New York.
He completed his residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and Roosevelt Hospital.
He served on the staffs of Sara Mayo Hospital, Touro Infirmary, East Jefferson General Hospital and Doctor's Hospital. He also taught at Tulane University's medical school.
He was a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a member of the Jefferson and Greater New Orleans obstetrical and gynecological societies and helped establish the Jefferson society. He was head of gynecology at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was also a president of the American Cancer Society.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Byrd Ruffin Ayerst; a son, Robert I. Ayerst Jr. of Germantown, Tenn.; a daughter, Elizabeth Ayerst Farber of Metairie; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Church Episcopal, 1329 Jackson Ave. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m.
Burial will be private.
Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
