Thursday, 3 February 2000 - 1:00am
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our loved one, Leona Emma Valliant, on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000 at the age of 84 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. She was born June 14, 1915 in Crozier, Ont. to the late Joe and Louise Zigo, and received her schooling in Fort Frances. Leona was united in marriage March 2, 1934 to Hugh Valliant, who predeceased her May 15, 1970. Leona worked in many jobs, including the insurance business for many years with her husband, as co-owner and operator of the Nestor Falls Hotel, and in Pembroke, Ont. as a hostess and cashier before retiring to live with her brother in Atikokan, Ont. in 1976. She moved back to Fort Frances in 1994, residing in Columbus Place (425 Nelson St.) Until recently, Leona liked to read, and enjoyed pets, cats, or dogs. Leona is survived by her son, Ron, and daughter-in-law, Doris; granddaughter, Lee and husband, Gordon Shrumm, and great-granddaughter, Pamela Shrumm, all of Nestor Falls, Ont. She also is survived by her brother, Carl, and wife, Helen, of Sebeca, Mn.; sister, Betty McPherson of Albuquerque, N.M.; sister-in-law, Julie Covell of Ear Falls, Ont.; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Henry, Stan, Harry, and Clifford. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000 at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Interment will take place at a later date in the Norman D. Cottam Memorial Gardens in Nestor Falls. In memoriam donations may be made to the Continuing Care Unit at La Verendrye General Hospital, 110 Victoria Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., or to a charity of your choice.
