Notes |
- MACK, Elwyn "Topper" Elwyn Mack or "Topper" as he was best known, passed away on Sunday (July 6, 2008) at the Hebrew Health Care Center in West Hartford, with his family by his side, after a long battle with diabetes and Alzheimer's. Topper was a lifelong resident of Essex. He was born on August 4, 1932 in Hartford. He attended the Essex Grammar School and then went onto Pratt High School where he graduated with the class of 1951. He attended the University of Connecticut, and was very proud to have served in the US Navy onboard the USS Lionfish for several years. He looked forward to the Essex Memorial Day Parade each year to proudly march with his comrades from other branches of the military. He was a member of the Essex Fire Engine Co. No. 1 from the early 1960's until the end of the 80's where he served as firefighter and Assistant Chief. He was a member of the Essex Rotary Club for many years where he served as President and also served as "Bake Master" at the clubs annual shad bake. He owned and operated Mack's Florist in Essex until turning to a career of manufacturing specialty hand crafted items. He loved to be on the water with family and friends having been an avid sailor since childhood, racing locally built Lightening and Blue Jay Class sailboats. Topper leaves behind his three children and their spouses, Kathy and her husband, Cy, Libby of Chester, Tom, and his wife Shelley of Essex, and Jim and his wife Penny, also of Essex. He also leaves behind his long time companion Caroline Cutone of Essex, and her family. He was predeceased by his parents, Lewellyn and Dora Baroni Mack. Calling hours will be held at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street, Centerbrook, on Friday, July 11 from 5-7 p.m. He will be buried with full military honors on Saturday July 12 at the Riverview Cemetery. The Burial will be private. Donations, in his memory, may be made to the Connecticut River Museum, 67 Main Street, Essex, Ct. 06426. Robinson, Wright & Weymer are in charge of the arrangements.
