NORTHFIELD ? Margaret "Peg" Hommel, 88, a former Barre resident, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, at Mayo Healthcare in Northfield where she resided for the past seven years.
Born on Aug. 30, 1917, in Williamstown, she was the daughter of Ernest and Julia (Hayward) Andrews. She attended Williamstown Elementary School and graduated from Williamstown High School in 1935. Later, she attended nursing school and nurses training in Newport and received her nursing degree.
On May 25, 1941, she married Reginald A. Hommel in Newport. They made their home in Newport and Williamstown before moving to Barre. He died on Dec. 10, 1990.
As a registered nurse, she worked at the Newport Hospital, Barre City Hospital and the Zanleoni Nursing Home in Barre. For several years, she worked for the Wobby family at the Heiress Motel and Wobby Jewelers both in Barre.
Her interests were spending time with her family, music and watching wildlife, the Dallas Cowboys football team and NASCAR racing. In earlier years, she enjoyed swimming.
Survivors include two daughters, Jane Blanchard and her husband Edmond of Middlesex and Wanda Baril of Berlin; two sons, Peter Hommel and his wife Jeanne of East Barre and Stephen Hommel and his wife Sue of Rutland; six grandchildren, Douglas Blanchard and his wife Ann, Theresa Gibbon and her husband David, Jeffrey Blanchard and his wife Christine, Scott Hommel, Josh Notte and Deanna Baril; seven great-grandchildren, Colin, Jared, Cannon, Meg, Evan, Chalaun and J.T.
A sister, Dorothy Whitney, predeceased her.
A service of remembrance will be held Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, at 8 p.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until the time of the service.
