Notes |
- Peacefully the life of Dr. Horace Wardner went forth to the unknown Friday afternoon. In his loss Laporte and the county at large loses a useful and honored life, which had defied the grim reaper through a long and active career devoted to his fellow man. He was a man of unusual marked ability and quiet worth. Dr. Wardner was married in 1858 to Miss Louise Rockwood of Sheboggan, Wis. He went out in 1861 as surgeon of the 12th Illinois, and the same year was promoted to brigade surgeon; succeeded to the charge of the general hospital at Mound City, Ill., and in 1863 became medical director on Gen. Grant's staff. He founded the St. Mary's infirmary at Cairo, Ill., and was president and a member of the Illinois board of health for many years. Officiated as superindent of the Southern Illinois insane asylum at Anne, and was recognized as an authority on the subject of insanity. In 1890 Dr. Wardner established the Interlaken Sanitorium at Laporte, with which he was more or less closely connected until his death. He was of German descent and New England ancestral stock, sturdy and honest. He also founded a school at Geneva, Wis., and held the degree of A.M. from Alfred academy, N.Y., and M.D. from Rush Medical college, Chicago, and was demonstrator of anatomy in what is now Chicago Medical College. His wife, the sharer of his long years of brilliant service, survives him.
