| Man struck, killed on I-81 while assisting motorist PARISH - A motorist who pulled to the side of Interstate 81 to assist another driver who had gone off the road was struck and killed by a pickup truck in the town at 5:03 p.m. Friday, state police said.
Police say Dale Haywood, of Altmar, was struck by a Chevrolet pickup truck after he pulled to the side of the southbound-traffic lane and exited his vehicle.
Mr. Haywood was pronounced dead at the scene but the driver of the truck was not injured, police said.

| Dale Haywood Dale E. Haywood, age 67, life resident of Altmar passed away Friday from injuries sustained in an accident. Dale was born April 8, 1951 in Gouverneur, the son of Earl and Marion Jerome Haywood. He graduated from APW High School in 1971. Dale married Diane Oakes on July 17, 1976. He was employed by APW School District as a bus monitor for ten years and had previously been employed by Mcauliffe Paper Company for 28 years. He was a member of Defiance Fire Company in Altmar for 45 years. He also umpired men and women?s softball leagues for the past 45 years. Dale enjoyed hunting and golfing.
Surviving are his wife, Diane, two daughters, Heather (Jason) Stupp of North Volney and Amanda Haywood of Altmar, two sisters, Sharon Horning of Parish and Zona Oakes of South Carolina, five brothers, Eugene Haywood of Altmar, Floyd Haywood of Williamstown, Kevin Haywood of Central Square, Terry Haywood of Richland and Darryl Haywood of Norfolk and four grandchildren, Hayley, Wyatt, Jason and Hayden.
A memorial service will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, May 31st at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski with burial at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. prior to the funeral. |
