- NORFOLK ? Funeral Services for 80 year old Leon H. Burnap, a resident of 105 River Road, Norfolk, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Buck Funeral Home in Norfolk with Rev. Carl Chamberlain presiding. Burial will follow the services in Riverside Cemetery, Norwood. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norfolk on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Mr. Burnap passed away late Sunday, September 9, 2018 at home with his wife at his side.
Leon is survived by his wife of 59 years, Patricia, Norfolk; a son, Brian and Nicole Burnap, Kansas City, Missouri; a daughter, Wendy Swartz, Citrus Grove, PA; four beloved grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Leon is also survived by a brother Duane and Carol Ann Burnap, West Stockholm and two sisters, Betty LeCuyer, Winthrop and Ellen and William Young, South Butler, NY. He was pre-deceased by his parents and a brother, Larry C. Burnap in 1983.
Born at home on the Tracey Farm in Stockholm, NY on April 21, 1938 to the late Herald E. and Viola Steenberg Burnap, Leon graduated from St. Lawrence Central High School in 1956 and attended Canton ATI, graduating in 1958, with a degree in Business Management. He served with the U.S. Army from 1961-1963. Upon his return from the service, he worked for Barstow Motors, Barrett Paving Materials and then worked for worked for General Motors as a Lab worker and technician, retiring in 1992 after 23 years of service. After his retirement, Leon was the Postal Carrier in Norfolk and Potsdam for several years. Leon was always involved in the community, being a member of the Norfolk American Legion Post #925, the Mason's What Cheer Lodge #689, the Media Shriners and Scottish Rites. He was active as the Norfolk Town Historian and was curator of the Norfolk Museum for over 24 years. Leon in his spare time enjoyed working in his hobby apple orchard and watching wildlife, especially birds. Memorial Donations in Leon's memory can be made to the United Methodist Trustee's Fund, Hospice and Palliative Care or to Norfolk Historical Museum.
