John D. Determan was born on November 24, 1931 in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Henry C. and Josephine (Lynch) Determan. He graduated from St. Joseph's School in 1950 and the University of Iowa in 1954.
He was united in marriage to Doris Mott on September 1, 1951 in Mason City. After returning to Mason City in 1954 he joined his father in the Determan Electric Company and remained in the business until his retirement in 2000.
Jack enjoyed golf, playing cards, boating, and building his HO train setup, but his happiest times were spent with his family. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Newman Knight fan, always rooting for 'his team.'
He and Doris spent many winters in Port St. Lucie, Florida. They enjoyed boating on the South Florida Waterways and taking their friends on boating trips. He was active in Tarpon Bay Yacht Club and the Saints and Sinners Golf Course. He treasured his time at the Mason City Country Club, playing golf with his good friends.
Jack was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), the Mason City Country Club, and a life-long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Doris; his nine children, Gail (Joe) Pitzenberger, Mason City, Randy (Angie) Determan, Mason City, John (Shannon) Determan, Mason City, Tim Determan, Mason City, Jeff Determan, Mason City, Mark (Pam) Determan, Leesburg, Virginia, Joe (Ann) Determan, Mason City, Kristin (Paul) Alman, Marshalltown, and Jennifer (Tim) Hitchcock, Mason City; 24 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Preceeding Jack in death are his parents, two sisters, Jean Shea and Pat Lammers, both of Chicago; and his grandson, Grant Hitchcock.
