- Sarah "Sally" Lang Schober, 86, of Brookfield Road, Berlin, passed away March 1, 2010, at Rowan Court.
She was born May 23, 1923, in Chicago, the daughter of Alliene Andrews Madden and Walter Benjamin Lang. She graduated from Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, N.J., attended Furman University in South Carolina, received her bachelor of arts in education from William Paterson University in New Jersey and her master's in library science at Rutgers University.
On Jan. 27, 1945, she married Thomas E. Schober in Ridgewood, N.J.
She was an elementary school librarian for 25 years at the West Caldwell, N.J.schools. She retired to the family farm in Berlin in 1989.
Sarah enjoyed reading, singing (Gilbert and Sullivan tunes, barbershop choruses), and loved all sorts of music, opera, Broadway theater and other performing arts.
She was a member/volunteer with numerous organizations: Berlin Elementary School, Berlin Congregational Church, League of Women Voters, National Organization of Women, Older Women's League, American Civil Liberties Union, Common Cause, Berlin and Vermont historical societies, Sweet Adelines, AARP, New Jersey Education Association, End of Life Choices, Funeral Consumer Alliance, 251 Club, Rural Vermont, Community of Vermont Elders, Vermont Ethics Network, Battered Women Shelter Services, Vermont Memorial Society, American Association of University Women, Planned Parenthood and Hemlock Society.
She is predeceased by her ex-husband, Thomas, and her brother, Andrews M. Lang.
Survivors include her daughters: Nancy S. Fitzgerald of Royersford, Pa., Linda Schober Best, of Morristown, N.J.; her sons: Peter C. Schober and his wife, Caroline Clifton Schober, of Berlin and Thomas E. Schober Jr., of Berlin; eight grandchildren and her beloved nieces, Sandra Lang Landsman of New York City and Jami Lang Castell of Reading, England.
A memorial service will be held at Berlin Congregational Church on Saturday, April 3, 2010, at 11 a.m. A reception will be held immediately after the service in the parish hall.
