- Dorothy R. Meece, 95, of Tallula passed away Sunday, November 3, 2013, at Sunny Acres Home. She was born on August 5, 1918, the daughter of John Arthur and Mable B. (Helm) Pennock. Dorothy married Carroll Meece on December 5, 1942, in St. Louis, Mo.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Jane (Buddy W.) King of Tallula; grandchildren, David King and Doug (Chris) King, both of Tallula, and Donna Martin of Petersburg; great-grandchildren, Logan and Austen King of Tallula, Jessica (Thomas) Rakes of Athens and Kameron Martin of Petersburg; special brother-in-law, Robert Daniels of Pittsfield; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special family at Sunny Acres Home. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 64 years, Carroll; sisters, Mary F. Freeman and Rosa Mae Daniels, both of Pittsfield; and brothers, Lyndle and Stanley Pennock.
Dorothy was a member of the Tallula Christian Church, Tallula Senior Citizens, and the Tallula American Legion Auxiliary Post #545. She was a military wife during WWII and drove a jeep for high ranking military officers. Apart from being a homemaker, Dorothy also worked as a server for the New Salem Lodge. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. She was also very proud to have four generations of family to serve on the Tallula Fire Department.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 7, 2013, at the Tallula Christian Church with the Rev. David Poeschel officiating. Visitation will be at 5?8 p.m., Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial will follow the services in Greenwood Cemetery, Tallula, Ill. Memorial donations may be made to the Tallula B.L.S. or the Tallula Fire Department.
