- Carl Franklin Reichenbach, 86, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 9, 2002, attended by his loving family.A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at West Raleigh Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Reichenbach was born in Centralia, Ill. He came to Raleigh in 1954 to open and manage the J.C. Penney Store in Cameron Village. He retired in 1975 after 40 years of service. During his successful career with J.C. Penney he was designated by the Penney Company as Government Relations Coordinator for the state and federal governments. He was Cameron Village Merchant of the year in 1964 and 1970. He was a member of the Raleigh Sales and Marketing Club and Raleigh Executive Club. One of his proudest accomplishments during his career was that he trained many employees who went on to become successful Penney executives. When he retired he was described in The Retailer publication as one of the most popular retail merchants Raleigh has ever had.
During his life in Raleigh, Mr. Reichenbach was also active in civic and church affairs. He served on the Raleigh Community Relations Committee from its beginning and served as chair of that committee in 1969-1970. He was president of both the Cameron Village Merchants Association and the Raleigh Merchants Bureau and served as vice president of the Chamber of Commerce. He also served as director of the Rex Hospital Foundation. He was a member of the Advisory Committee for Occupational Education for Wake County and served on United Fund Committees for several years. As ardent supporters of N.C. State University, Mr. Reichenbach and his wife were active members of the Wolf Pack Club for 46 years. He was also a member of the Raleigh Sports Club. Mr. and Mrs. Reichenbach attended the Fellowship Club. Mr. Reichenbach was a deacon and an elder in the West Raleigh Presbyterian Church.
In his retirement, Mr. Reichenbachs greatest joys were working in his yard and sharing its beauty with others; spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends; feeding the birds in his yard; and attending Wolfpack sporting events.
Mr. Reichenbach is survived by his wife, Harriet Jeannette Pennock; his son, Carl F. Reichenbach, Jr. and his wife, Pat of Angier; his daughters, Elsie R. Self and her husband, Jim of Eugene, Ore. and Jane Reichenbach Harlow of Greensboro; his seven grandchildren, Tracy Robbins, Carl F.
