Notes |
- MOSCOW Longtime Orofino pharmacist John (Buzz) Oud, 84, died Friday at Gritman Medical Center of causes related to age.
He was born in Spokane on May 28, 1908, the son of John and Delia Oud.
When he was six years old, the family moved to Orofino, where his father entered the hardware business. Oud attended Orofino schools and graduated from Orofino High School in 1927.
He spent his summers working for the U.S. Forest Service, and as a soda jerk in S.R. Swantek's drug store in Orofino. He attended the University of Idaho in Moscow for two years, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Oud later transfered to the southern branch of the UI in Pocatello, where he majored in pharmacy. He graduated in 1931.
After graduation, he worked for a summer in a Kendrick drugstore pharmacy.
Oud married Agnes Moore in Gooding, Idaho, on June 15, 1933.
A year later, they bought a drugstore in Orofino from Alfred and Katherine Hill, and named it Oud's Pharmacy. The drugstore was located where the Ponderosa Cafe is now.
The couple sold the pharmacy in 1967 to Mick and Ruth Markuson, and Oud then worked for the state of Idaho as a drug inspector, and also in the pharmacy at Clearwater Valley Hospital.
After retiring in 1984, the Ouds moved to Moscow.
Oud helped organize the Orofino Lion's Club and was its first president. He also worked on a number of civic projects, including building a city swimming pool and helping o rganize Orofino Celebrations Inc., in connection with the Clearwater County Fair, and serving as its first president.
Oud also was a member of the Joint School District 171 school board for 20 years. He was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Orofino, and the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Mosocw.
Oud had a lifelong interest in sports, playing basketball in high school and college and being an avid golfer.
He is preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Oud; a brother and a sister.
Oud is survived by his wife at their Moscow home; one daughter, Nancy Burke of Adkinson, N.H.; and a grandson.
Cremation has already taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Ascension Lutheran Church in Orofino. Rev. Gordon Braun of Emmanuel Lutheran Church will officiate.
The family suggests memorials go to either the Moscow or Orofino Lutheran church.
