Calvin R. Pierce, 73, of Beulah, passed away Friday, May 14, 2010, at his home. He was born April 8, 1937, in Elberta, the son of Frank and Jennie (Phelps) Pierce. Calvin married Shirley Ellen Sleeper on April 16, 1960. Calvin graduated in 1956 from Elberta High School. He then attended college for two years studying law enforcement. After graduation, Calvin went to work for the Ann Arbor Railroad until 1960 when he was laid off. In between lay-offs, he worked as a dispatcher for the Benzie County Sheriff Department, and as a police officer for the City of Frankfort.
In June of 1960, he went to work for C&O Railroad in Ludington. In September of 1960, he was laid off again and went to work as a security guard for Gerber Baby Food Company in Fremont. Calvin also worked on Fremont's Police Reserve. With another lay-off in 1962, he returned to C&O Railroad in Wyoming, Michigan. He left there in 1973, moving to McGrew Yards in Flint. Calvin retired from CSXT Railroad on May 28, 1999, with 41 years.
Calvin had a true love for the Michigan Outdoors, including hunting, fishing and camping. He also loved going to bingo and seeing all his friends.
Calvin is survived by: his wife of over 50 years, Shirley; children, Ted (Patti) Pierce of Flint, Todd Pierce of Kingsley, Jennifer (Robert) Hawley of Grand Blanc, and Jo (Steven) Bargabus of Holly; grandchildren, Kristy Pierce, Ashley Pierce, Travis Pierce, Trevor Pierce, Matthew Bargabus, Cody Bargabus, Thomas Bargabus and Amber Hawley; his twin brother, Melvin (Etta) Pierce of Frankfort.
Calvin was preceded in death by: his parents; his daughter, Kelly Ann; and his sisters, Johanna Fourman and June VanBrocklin.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at the Elberta United Methodist Church, in Elberta, with Reverend Gregory Culver officiating.
Interment will follow in the Gilmore Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, in Beulah.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
