- Mary D. White, age 84, died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the Laurels of Bedford. Mary was born February 1, 1925, in Woodland, MI. She was the fourth of five born to Harley V. and Nellie N. Townsend. Mary graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1942. She attended Manchester College in Indiana and Butterworth School of Nursing in Grand Rapids. In 1945, she moved with her parents to Battle Creek. In 1947 she married Robert R. Pennock, he preceded her in death. Mary went to work as a Social Worker for the Department of Social Services of Michigan. She retired from D.S.S. on December 14, 1985. In 1985, Mary married George H. White who also preceded her in death. Mary was a member of the Battle Creek Church of the Brethren, the Social Workers of Michigan and P.W.P. Mary enjoyed being with her family, traveling, camping, watching birds and wildlife at her home in Bedford. Surviving are daughters, Linda (Ronald) Brott and Sherry (Jack) Henning; 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; a brother, John (Barb) Townsend. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Pennock; son-in-law, Jack Henning; her brothers, Dale, Charles and Burl Townsend. Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4:00 p.m. and 6 to 8:00 p.m. at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 12:00 p.m., Friday, May 29, 2009, at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. James A. Gysel officiating. Interment will be at Bedford Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
